Title: Baseball, anyone?
Post by: G._Hoffman on September 15, 2010, 11:07:36 pm
A little late in the season, but my Twins are 8 games in front of the White Sox, and only 1 game out of the best record in the major league (not to mention the AL)!!!  We also have every chance to sweep the White Sox tomorrow, which I suppose is kind of like pouring salt on the wounds (particularly after watching their former slugger Jim Thome drive in two completely superfluous runs in tonight's 9-3 Twins win.)

The sad thing is that it looks very much like we will still be facing the F**king Yankees in the ALDS, as the Devil Rays remaining schedule looks more like little league teams than the Majors (their last ten games are against the M's, the O's, and the Royals!)

Go Twins!!!!

OOOh a loss to Oakland tonight.

I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't been to the new Target Field yet. I spent much of the summer in the hospital or recovering from surgery and now I'm paying the bills so a ballgame hasn't been in budget.

After countless games at the dome, I should treat myself...but there is only one home game left after payday

The Twins are a scrappy team that finds a way to win.  You gotta love Ron Gardenhire's management style too. I think the "man" this year has been Michael Cuddyer, as he's played 4 or 5 different positions well this year to cover injuries. When is the big Canadian slugger Morneau back? Sooner the better I hope, so he's warmed up for the postseason.

AL east is no place to get a good w/l record.

I'm usually an NL Central fan, but they disappoint in the playoffs as of late.

Go Rays.

The new place is amazing.  I've never been to Wrigley Field, but I've seen a few games in Fenway, and this place is better.  The field itself doesn't have quite the character of the really old fields  - its too dang nice and regular, not like that slope in Fenways left field - but if you are in the stands you have it much better than Fenway, which always feels kind of dank when you are under the stands.  Target Field is open, airry, and just lovely.  The only time I felt I was inside was while I was using the restrooms.  Even going up the escalators, it felt like you were outdoors.  One of the best ball parks in baseball, no question.

I don't think we're going to get Morneau back this year, and seeing the problems Manny Ramirez has had after his extended stint on the DL, I think that we're just going to have to do it without him.  But given how everyone has been stepping up since Morneau has been out, I think they really can do it.  The odds would be better with him, of course, but only if he's really healthy, and can really play.

The Rays are an impressive team, but don't write off the NL central - the Reds are looking pretty good this year.

I watched some of the Tigers/White Sox game today, though, and I wish we could get Justin Verlander in Minnesota - that guy is astonishing!  I watched him throw to Konerko, and after throwing a 101 MPH fastball with some really sick right-to-left and downward motion (it started out going right at Konerko's head, and ended up just brushing the bottom outside corner!), he proceeded (with no perceptible change in his arm motion or speed) to throw an 82 MPH change up, before getting a K on another 100mph heater.  How the heck do you even DO that!

The Twins can beat anyone....except the Yankees. It seems like they just bow down....  I was born a Fourth Generation Yankees fan but have become a Twins fan as I have spent much of my life in the upper midwest and been to countless games at the Dome.

I really thought the Twins had a great shot at the world series this year, as long as they didn't play New York....As it turned out, Tampa won the division so they Twins had to play the Yanks. Who would have thought the second place team would give more trouble.....

It's not over yet though.

1-1.  I think the Phillies are stronger, but we'll see what SF can do at home.

The hitters were ready in the first game.  Just one high fastball or hanging slider and they took Roy or Tim down---town!

Yeah, I was a little disappointed in game one as a pitchers duel.  I would have much preferred a 1-0 game, with the one run being a manufactured run involving a steal, a sac bunt, and a sac fly or something like that.  (Or even better, someone stealing home!).  I'm afraid I'm just not a big fan of the home run.  They can be exciting, but there is no particular drama to them!
