Title: Where have all the 6550's gone?
Post by: bigsbybender on October 05, 2010, 11:21:45 pm
Doug!  Where are the 6550's in your store?

Are they not worth stocking anymore? (Too expensive?, Low sales volume?)

I'm planning on using some in an upcoming build.

6550's became way too expensive like all the Russian tubes did a while back.
Except that the 6550's are way more expensive than 6l6's and 6v6's

No one would pay that much for them
Just look at the 5u4gb sovtek
I have sold maybe one or two since the prices jumped through the roof a year or so ago

That answers that....    $36 for a 5U4 .....   then I'd hate to see what 6550 goes for.

They go for $50 a matched pair>>>  http://www.tubedepot.com/eh-6550.html

Cool...  that's a lot easier to swallow than some of the prices I've seen out there.  $70-80/Pair.

Thanks.

$50 - $70 might be worth it for bass amp or possibly steel guitar. They'd better last a LONG time, though!

You should buy every one they have in stock because they cost me more than that, per tube.

That is if they are platinum matched like I buy all my tubes

Unles you are buying 100 of a tube, you can't compete with guys that stock huge amounts of tubes.
And there is no way I am going to buy 100 matches pairs of a tube that sells as little as 6550's do.
I sell 100 6L6's to every 6550 sold

Here's the current New Sensor wholesale market pricing on 6550eh's with platinum matching
The prices are for each tube, not a pair.

Doug, it sounds like you follow the same rule that I do: sell what 90% of the people want to buy.

It's not just big bottles that are ridiculously priced. I had a friend call me to order some 12AX7s and thought he had to have Groove Tubes as that is what was in his amp. I can get JJs for less than half the price of the GTs. What's going on in Russia to drive the prices so high?

The Russian mafia is one big reason

"ExpoPUL makes two-thirds of the world's musical vacuum tubes. Tuned in to the music industry's needs, Matthews increased sales to 170,000 last year from 40,000 tubes a month in 1999."

I am quite sure this forum and the knowledge within it's members has contributed to that kind of growth (or recovery). I wonder if the JJ factory is subject to such pressures.
