Title: New amp, retro style
Post by: Madison on October 12, 2010, 12:14:07 am
Thought I'd show and tell the most recent.
Nothing too special.
Just a Champ voiced pretty clean with the NFB on the tone's push pull pot to give more gain of someone dares.
I started out with a 6SL7.Sadly, it didn't work out for me and I switch to a 12ax7.
Peace.

Very nice.

One thing I wished I could do was build the cabinet too.

Beautiful woodworking as always.  I love the way you got the grain to "pop"

Is that a 10" speaker?

What are the cab dimensions, how'd you come up with them, and (most importantly) how does it sound in that cab?

Sorry for all the questions.  It's just that the shape/dimensions are off the beaten track, and it does look really good.

Cheers,

Chip

Nice work. What is the finish polyurethane or? Spray or brush?

Thanks for the kind comments.

>>What are the cab dimensions, how'd you come up with them, and (most importantly) how does it sound in that cab?

This particular amp in cm is 28.5W X 32H X 24D.
Wood thickness 18mm.
(you'll have to do the math for Imperial)

Proportion take me a long time to come up with.
No real science involved in this particular case, just aesthetics.
I mill most of my wood at 24cm wide because I usually make heads but this width houses an 8 inch speaker well.
The chassis I order (or make sometimes) come in dimensions that work out really well for a single speaker set up.

I concentrated on getting the speaker baffle area somewhat proportionate because, I think, that's where your eyes tend to look for something "balanced".
Then add chassis to the design.
YMMV

It's sounds good.
Kind of boxy with the back panel but that's okay.
I actually kind of like the tone with the back panel removed.

>>Is that a 10" speaker?
8"

>>What is the finish polyurethane or? Spray or brush?
Lacquer spray

11.2" wide x 12.6" tall x 9.45" deep

What a cool little package!  It's a "table top amp"

Wide panel Champ was 12 x 11 x 7-1/4.

5F1 grew to 13-1/2" x 12-1/2" x 8"

5F2-A Princeton was 18" x 16-3/4" x 8-3/4" (same size as '55 Deluxe according to the FFG)

Cheers,

Chip

That's what I was shooting for.
I imagine it on a bookshelf, fireplace mantle, or something.
Thanks.

You can always shimmy some more off those back panels until it opens up some more... maybe try 1/2 inch width shimmies each time
