Title: I cant get my speaker out ga-20
Post by: john_t on November 03, 2010, 04:35:26 pm
I have what I believe to be a 1950 Gibson ga-20. The leatherette covering runs from the top of the cabinet onto the back cover. (All one piece. Same on bottom)The out put transformer is bolted to the speaker frame. Not a issue.  A Jensen p12r. The chassis will swing out but there does not seem to be room to remove the speaker with the top or bottom back covers in place. I dont want to hack up the cabinet and covering. I cant believe the speaker was installed prior to covering the cabinet.

HELP.

John

Can you take out the baffle from the front with speaker attached ? I don't think they would tolex it after speaker was in ....but without seeing it I can only guess

Rafe, you might be onto something. There is a weird kinda of straw type grill cloth with a wire under the cloth. With the grill cloth out of the way I might be able to work the speaker out of the cabinet.  Just had the amp recapped and I love this amp. I am afraid if I continue to play and drive the amp hard Il toast the speaker. It is a bit microfonic, not sure if its the speaker or not so I thought I would get it re coned.

Rafe, you were right on. It's a bit of a pain but you have to pull the speaker baffle out then there is just enough room to slip the speaker out the back.

thanks much

Great news on your amp ....I am waiting on two 8" alnico jensens which are being reconed.....I would try another speaker first to see if the microphonics go away (or tap your tubes one at a time with speaker attached)
I would not redo a speaker unless absolutely necessary. It's like the pet cemetary they come back ...but never the same....which doesn't mean they are bad....if your speaker is OK and you like it, my advice is use it ...that's what I do , however some people take them out and put them away to protect them.
Two different schools of thought personal reward or resale.....Me, I'll enjoy the sound of the original if possible

Rafe I have a Weber sig 12S I purchased a few years back. Weber had a buy 2 for less deal going at the time. I do like the speaker in the amp. I am not planning on selling the amp. I am also not big on the idea of pulling the speaker out so someone else can enjoy it when Iam gone. I was concerned I could damage the speaker beyond repair if I cranked the amp much. Not that i am playing heavy metal with the amp. More R & B type stuff.  Is that not a concern.

That speaker was most likely rated to take all the watts that amp could throw at it. I(I is the key word) don't think it would be a problem......I have a 65 supro thunderbolt with a 15 inch jensen in it. I dime it and play and have had it a few years no problem. It's really going to be a judgement call for you. However you said you were going to have it reconed. Sooooooo you may as well use and enjoy it, because when it's reconed they are going to replace everything( you won't ruin it in that regard) .....so you can't really lose. Hopefully other will chime in here so I don't mislead you ....these are only my opinions and my take on it regards R

OK, I think i am going to just play the stock speaker for a while and enjoy it. I think your right. I guess as long as it sounds ok. Dont fix what aint broken.

Thanks again for the help.
