Has anyone ever built their own Model train transformer

I want to build a control panel

I believe in some old Model Railroader mags they had such projects, but alas, where to get a hold of one.

I am thinking starting with a 16 volt doorbell transformer and a rheostat or light dimmer slider switch  :undecided:

I once started to make a drawing for the electronics for one that does not involve modifying the loco.
