Title: 5F6-a Build Help
Post by: Bassman720 on March 04, 2011, 02:16:39 pm
Hey guys, I'm Building a 5F6-a Replica and i'm a noob so i have some questions.

First has to do with the cap pan. My layout doesn't include the cap pan and I've looked at the Ceriatone and Webber layouts which are both have different things. There are 4 caps, 2 of which are in parallel. In both layouts, The parallel set and the other two each go to the board for a total of three wires (A B C). where the layouts differ is on the other side. On the Ceriatone layout, the parallel set and the other set each go to a star ground. On the webber one, they're all connected. I have also read in a forum to ground the parallel set to the place where the power transformer is grounded and the other two to a brass plate. My kit didn't come with a brass plate so if i choose this third option, i'm not really sure where to ground the two single caps.

My second issue is with grounding the pots. I've already grounded them to themselves but Ive seen that some people connect the pots with a ground wire. What is the best setup.

My last problem is with the grounding overall. I have 2 3-prong grounding strips and not exactly sure where to ground everything. I know that one will be connected to a nut of the power transformer and that the power cable and transformer grounds will go to it. I'm not sure where to ground the other caps from the cap pan, the input jacks, the grounds from the board, and the switches.

Thankyou for any help

Hi Bassman , All the info you need is in the Library. Look for the grounding layout. The pots are better to be grounded to a separate buss wire.If you have a number of earth wires just add then to the same grounding bolt at the tranny.  Thanks

hi, Bassman720

Look in here,    http://www.freewebs.com/valvewizard2/grounding.html

Look in here,        http://www.aikenamps.com/StarGround.html

And don't forget about looking in Dougs tube amp library, lots of good stuff in there.

Take your time and read thru them a few times. Let it soak in and maybe read them again.

A lot of guys here swear by Dougs grounding plan.

If after reading them you still have more questions any number of guys here will be glad to help you out.

I use a 40-20-20-20 cap can for filter caps and ground it to a nut on the power transformer, since it's always right beside it. I run a bus wire on the backs of the pots (also ending at a nut on the PT) for the rest of the grounds. Always works for me.
