They are saying it was an 8.8 earthquake. It looks to me that this may well be the end for some of the island nations in the Pacific, as the tsunami is higher than any spot in countries like Tarawa.
The videos on BBC of Japan right now are scary as hell.

Just heard from my son. He lives in Tokyo a couple hundred miles from the epicenter. He said even there the locals were amazed at the power. Biggest they ever fealt. Feel bad for the people up north... Huge mess!

I hear projected guesses of 6-16 foot waves hitting Hawaii.
I went thru a pretty strong earthquake living in Taipei Taiwan in the early 60's. It was scarier than the 4 typhoons we had in 2yrs. Pictures fell off all the walls.
Can't get away from them as opposed to holding up inside a home in a typhoon.
