Title: The "Double C" amp (new build)
Post by: tubenit on March 12, 2011, 09:21:04 pm
Guys,

I sold a one of my Tweed Overdrive Specials to a great guitarist & friend, Chip. I also had sold him one of the Carolina Blues Special Bogen conversions years ago.  After the playing the TOS, he wanted to convert the CBS into something that had switchable clean and OD.

The challenge was the Bogen chassis was a very very tight build with limited space to make the conversion happen. There was not a realistic way to have a Dumble type OD in there.

So, I built a turret board using Hoffman's materials & the amp chassis was still not very neat. However, it was dead quiet on idle, everything worked great and it had NO oscillation problems.

So here is the schematic and a sound clip of Chip playing his amp. I had put the soldering iron up about an hr before he came over. He lives in another state and was only in town visiting a couple of days.

I have always admired Chip's playing!  He had never heard this song before playing it. This was the second take.

For anyone who may be interested, I put a SCH schematic and layout (Bogen style layout and regular style) in the SCH Library.

My friend's comment was this was the smoothest overdrive of any amp he's played.

WOW! That really sounds GREAT, T!

Chip is a fortunate guy to have a friend like you build world-class amps for him!  :bravo1:

I also got Chip to play the same tune using a 12AV7 in the OD section. I actually liked the tone of the amp with the 12AV7 better than the 5751.  However, he stated with his style of playing that he preferred the 5751.

With 12AV7 tube:

I think this tube is a little more articulate and expressive, IMO. I think it's also smoother and a little more vowel like.

Interesting voicing's on your preamp tube cathodes. That is why I come to this site. It makes me want to try different stuff and step out of the box a little. Ill listen to the clip after my wife gets done taking her nap.
