Title: Help ID a coupleof cabs?
Post by: BnATX on April 01, 2011, 05:06:37 pm
Hello

I picked these two cabs up a while back and have not been able to ID them.
Clicky Me (https://picasaweb.google.com/metalman318/SpeakerCabs#)
The 2x12 column looks old and Fendery but inside looks not so old and Fendery, to me anyways.
Plus the jack hole looks hokey on back. Does not look pro at all. Forgot to take a pic of that.
And........ the writing that is on the inside suggests it is some home made cab.
The other cab looks Vox and looks old. Looked to be some kind of combo with a 15" speaker hole.
Someone cut the top out bigger. Vintage.................... or not.

If any of this is "vintage" i would prefer not to do anything destructive to them as there is always someone out there
who would appreciate these items and could use them.

Any thoughts on these anyone might have would be great.
Thanks !

Billy

That Vox looking one is a "Thomas Organ" US made Vox cabinet. The vast majority of the "Thomas" Vox amps were Solid State and not terribly collectible. Someone did cut a bigger hole in it too.

The other cabinet, looks Fendery but appears to be made of Plywood. A Fender of that cosmetic era would have been constructed solid pine boards except for the speaker baffle and back panel which would most likely be particle board instead of plywood.

At first glance I thought it was a Traynor PA tower cabinet, but it only has 2 speakers and they are 12 inchers.  The Traynor towers that I've seen usually have like 4x8" speakers in a tower of about that size and shape. It is really Fender style in construction down to the divider in the middle of the cabinet, but I've never seen those dimensions in a Fender Cab. Fender did make PA tower speakers for their tube PA head, (Everyone did) but I don't believe they used 2x12" speakers.
That one is still a mystery....  Perhaps it's a well-made custom piece.

Fender and Peavey both made column cabs, but every one I've seen had 4-12's or 4-10's... never seen any 2-by's
