Title: What's a Voskhod Sunrise 12AX7VKA about?
Post by: bluesbear on June 12, 2011, 04:10:56 pm
I see Antique Electronics has Voskhod Sunrise 12AX7's for sale. All I can find out about them is they have a larger bottle, they're made in Russia, and they're supposed to have a "rich, full tone", whatever that means. I've read Voskhod invented the 300B. Has anyone tried or heard more about these tubes?
Thanks,
Dave

I'd be surprised if that were true. I'm 95% sure that Western Electric introduced the 300B.

To my limited knowledge, Voskhod is one of a number of russian tube manufacturers still in business. "Sovtek" used to be a mix of Voskhod, Ulyanov, Saratov (and probably other) tubes, which were then relabeled by a single importer/distributor.

Yeah, I read it, I didn't say I believed it. It's all advertising and not to be trusted. The idea of a larger bottle 12AX7 is intriguing, though, and I'd love to hear if someone's tried it. According to Antique Electronics, it won't fit in some sockets with a shield type base.
Thanks,
Dave

Восход - Voskhod (Sunrise in English) is a large Russian factory located in Kaluga. Their 12AX7VKA is basically a 6N2P with a 12AX7-compatible pinout. A very nice tube when properly tested/graded.

Western Electric did. The 300B was launched in 1938 and was manufactured 'til 1988...

Nice info FYL. This seems like it should sound nice but it looks a little like an EH/Sovtek?

When I first read "Voskhod Sunrise" it immediately had me thinking of a Russian version of a Tequilla Sunrise (Vodka Sunrise).

EH/Sovtek are also re-marketers, if most of their tubes come from Saratov, a number of them are produced by Voskhod - their octal small signal tubes for instance - and others. And all use the same Soviet era designed components such as plates or glass envelopes.

I talked to them at Antique Electronics this morning. They really don't know anything about it yet, other than they were told "It's a good tube." If I get around to ordering a couple, I'l report.

I have a Fender Bronco on my bench right now with these Voskhod 12AX7VKA tubes in it , they do have a very rich tone , fitting then into a shielded socket is a bit of a challenge though. I checked Antique Electronics just a few seconds ago they don't list them that's a shame I would like to do some more tone testing on these.

After testing it it sounds just like a Sovtek too , it is a very tight fit into a shielded socket though.
