Title: speakers for Geezer's HoSo
Post by: John on June 16, 2011, 02:41:31 pm
I *think* I'm on the home stretch with the amp, so my question is what would be good speakers to pair with it? I'd like to match something to the amp for the type of music I enjoy playing. Mostly blues/bluesy jazz and classic rock; not too much metal in my repertoire. I don't sniff corks, so I'm not looking to spend a gazillion bucks on "tonal goodness". I read the many favorable reviews on the Warehouse speakers, and I know everyone likes Webers and some of the Celestions.

What I'm really considering is building a 2-8" cabinet, and angling the speakers towards each other as was discussed in another thread. Are 8" large enough to not break up at higher volume, or would 12" give me better flexibility? I'm looking for a speaker that does NOT distort. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks,
John

I'm currently using the Weber Signature 12's with my amps (Hoso & Hoso-type based) & they are the best tone yet with the most inexpensive speaker. I'm a bluesy/jazzy guy myself.......

$50 + shipping (12B, british cone)

Again, thanks! I think a pair of them would do the trick. And cheap enough to avoid glares from The Wife.  :icon_biggrin:

Got a pair of 8" Sig series this week, and banged together that angled cabinet out of scrap lumber this afternoon. It looks funny as hell, especially with the old sneakers tucked underneath to angle it up a bit, but I'll tell ya what: that amp comes alive through decent speakers! It sounded fine through an old Celestion red label that came out of a cheapie Kustom SS amp that I bought many years back, but through the nice speakers it's just outstanding. I hate to use the word soulful, but it's what comes to mind. I think it even helps me play better.  :icon_biggrin: Well.... maybe not.

Anyway, attached for your amusement is the speaker cabinet, and amp "cabinet", both built from scrap lumber, in a hurry. I promise to build something better that the amp deserves. Thanks AGAIN to this forum for so much information, and Geezer and Tubenit especially. Cheers!

Looks like you've been checking out Bill Fitzmaurice's place...
His plans angle the baffle board's bottom forward so you don't have to flatten a pair of sneakers.
That design minimizes beaming and spreads out the 'sweet spot', making it very listenable.
Huzzah!

Yes, I had seen the thread here, and then looked up his site again before I "built" (slapped together) the cab. I've been busy (good thing) but when things slow down a bit I want to make a combo cabinet, and then angle the speakers back too. I think I'll use the birch plywood. Seems a lot of fellas here prefer it.
