Matchless/AC30 power amp volume differences

I built an amp a while back with a Matchless-style power amp(DC-30). I've used it for sometime, and it is rather loud, but it is not quite as loud as a nice cranked AC-30. I was recently asked by a friend who played it why this was...could it be the output TX? Or does that master volume in the DC-30 circuit kill some gain even when cranked? Or some other, more sinister, explanation?(sound-sucking vortex?)

What speaker do you play through? Different speakers have very different efficiency and frequency response that makes one much louder then a other one.

Hi,
Disconnect the master vol pot and check the volume.
If it's much louder install the master volume control before the PI. You'll need a stereo pot in order to cover both channels.

Well, I did a comparison test with an identical amps that I built using one of the old OT's that Doug used to sell for an amp with 4 EL84's and the newer one I made is definately quieter. Using the same speakers, same guitar, same settings. The newer amp just lacks the same punch and power("balls", if you will).
The OT I used on the new one is a Hammond 1645 I believe...the one with a 5000 Ohm primary. I figured it was close enough to 4K Ohms, but I think this may be the problem? If so, does anyone know where I might find a reasonably priced OT with the right impedance?
