Title: Speakers amd more speakers and more !!!!!!!!!!
Post by: catnine on July 10, 2011, 06:38:01 pm
I have to chime in here because at one point I went speaker crazy . My choices always were either weber or eminence and jensens. I tried celestion as well but never really like them.

My first quest was for a good 12 in a 77 music master bass amp after the cap job and re-bais and the removal of an input cap. I tryed first the weber sig 12 s ceramic sounded good and all the weber sigs I went for the s (ribbed cone) for later breakup and bottom end. Not that the stock square magnet speaker that came stock in the 77 mm bass amp was bad it was actually pretty good.

After seaching all the hype offered by the different eminence speakers and webers and jensen whcih is to say you cannot tell at all from data sheets at all . I ended up with a eminence  stone henge and the only other speaker that was even close meaning it had the bass and mids and highs balanced not one standing out much more than the other, the other that was quite close was a jensen mod 12/50. One that sounded close was the eminence tonker yet it was a higher powered speaker and a bit mutted yet at high volume it did the job.

At one point when I had my 73 SV none trem AA764 champ I got the weber sig 8s alnico and was pleased completely . I then thought what about the sig 8 s ceramic and the huge mag 8F150 so i got both of them and build a cab . If you want smooth clear warm and forced breakup go with the sig8s alnico , I could not tell much difference between the sig 8s ceramic and the 8F150 both sounded sterile to my ears.

Tens are another story yet in the end for me anyway an alnico ribbed cone is the way to go . And of course it all depends on what you want to do . play at home or in clubs . I do have to say for the most part that the basic decription of each speaker by the manufacturer is pretty close at least from my experience. .. I my 6G2/5E5 build I had the tonker far to much bottom and had to be pushed great for gigs , the weber silver bell 30 watt ceramic better and loser but still had to be pushed and both needed to be on full treb on the tone to get highs unless the amp was really cranked , at home a weber sig 12s alnico , plenty of bottom smooth highs and smooth mids , push it and at 7 it can go into a nice blues breakup yet the tone pot now works well and is usable at all levels from 1-10 . It's abalancing act at best.
