Title: New SE Build
Post by: dpm309 on August 01, 2011, 01:58:21 pm
In my quest for a good sounding single ended amp, I came across this design that I am planning on building.  A couple of years ago, I built a High Octane SE amp but am not happy with the sound.  The HO is a great amp for high gain metal at low volumes but I want something that can do blues, classic rock and some country.  This SE amp can use a variety of power tubes such as 6V6, 6L6, KT66, EL34, 6CA7 and KT77 for up to 12 watts+.  It looks like a straight forward design using only 1 pre-amp tube and VRM [DC power level control].  There are a couple of switches that allow a fat/thin sound and a tweed/Marshall type sounds.  This drawing specifies a PT rated at 315-0-315 at 120ma.  Heyboer can make one to these specs for an arm and a leg.  I am looking at other options for the PT such as a Hammond 272X (310-0-310, 70ma) or a BBQ International voltages Power Transformer (660V or 600V, 80ma).  I am also considering a Champ PT (325-0-325, 70ma).  I have a couple of questions on these PTs.  Do I really need 120ma for only 2 tubes and VRM?  Also, what modifications would be needed, if at all, using higher or lower voltage than 315-0-315?  I have attached a schematic of the amp and the BBQ PT specs.  For the OT, I am considering using the BBQ Single Ended Output Transformer, 5K : 2,4,8, and 16 which matches the specs on the SE amp.  Please advise.

Thanks,

Dan

Have a look at Edcor:
XPWR061: 300-0-300, 120mA
XPWR047: 330-0-330, 120mA
both reasonabley priced at $54 (unless the price has gone up recently)

Personally I'd go with 061, since I think 300-0-300 would be plenty with a SS rectifier.
