Title: current production el34 tubes
Post by: duke of earl on August 07, 2011, 09:22:47 pm
Looking to build a 50 watt with these tubes. Anyone try the electro-harmonix version el34's? I hear the Winged C's sound really good in Marshall style amps.

EH's are solid and robust.

I like the winged c's...been using them for the past few years with no problems.

I would like to give the reissue tung-sol's and mullard's a try soon.

my 2 cents

I havnt tried the EH,s but I changed out my JJ,s for winged C,s and the differance was night and day, I really like the sound of them I just wish they didnt cost twice as much.

I used "C" and JJ and they are still working good no problems to report. It's almost 5 years without any strange failure...Also had great results with 6CA7 EH.

Best Regards

I like the Winged C a lot myself. I've also had great luck with the JJ KT77's. YMMV.

Greg what were your thoughts on the kt77,s compared to el34,s or what tonal differance did you here between the two.
Thanks Bill

In my limited experience w/ the JJ-77 I like it a lot also but I'm only using it in my SE design. It's got a really nice quality of overdriving juicy tone to it and also a sweet pure clean tone too.

I've been using the EH ones for stuff lately. I have them in my home Hi-Fi that I built for 6550 but rebiased and used EL34 and liked the result.
I've had JJ in my Plexi-ish amp for years, no problems, good tone.

About 6 Months ago I ended up with some KT77's from JJ.  I've tried them in a Marshall 2204 and a Peavey Windsor. I really like them.

Long Story short. I've had pretty good luck with most EL34 types. I remember about 15 years ago when the EL34 was becoming scarce and I worried about the future of them. Some of the early mods I learned was to set up Marshalls for 6L6 just in case. I'm sure glad there are several choices of EL34 now..

Hi Bill,

I haven't directly compared the JJ KT77 against JJ EL34's in the same amp, but overall the KT77 is like combining the best of EL34's and 6L6's to my ears. They have a thicker bottom end yet still break up nicely and compress nicely. I like them a lot.
