Has anyone had experience with software based oscilliscopes?

My VERY limited experience is that I downloaded a free ware O Scope program, and plugged a mic in to my sound card and using the frequency counter on it.

I cannot see the real use in a software based O scope, other than novelty, or probing around in low voltage low current digital circuits.(not in the Mhz range for sure not in the Ghz range either)

Having had an Oscilloscope before and probing in old tube tv's and radios I know of a few possible dangers  of probing into an area that has unexpected high voltages. putting those kind of voltages into a computer would release the smoke!

A buffer would have to be made, and probes (homemade probes suck for o scopes)

I'd rather build other stuff.
