Hair dryer (not a heat gun) and paper towels,  then mineral spirits,  then mild soap?
Or sell it to a Goth band?

Sorry, just saw this and I'm sure it's too late, but if anyone runs into this again....

Use a terrycloth towel and lay a single layer on the wax and use an iron.  As it melts the towel will soak it up.  Use a fresh area of the towel and repeat and don't overheat.  It does not take much heat to melt wax.  If the tolex is getting hot, stop and let it cool.  Take your time.
