Hi Doug
Sorry to give you disturbance
as you told about any request about the forum, I post this question here, hoping this is the right place
I'm not able to understand how to do as to add images to a thread or to a personal message (not as an attachment)
if I use the icon above (insert image)
I obtain this: [ img ][ /img ] - (spaces added as to show what I mean)
then what I must do ?
Thanks and .......... Sorry for my naivety
Kagliostro
Just put the link to the pic between the (img)(/img) html tags. I modified your post and included a pic from my website. Just modify this post again and you'll see how I put a pic in this message. Here's my pic...
and here is mine

Thanks

Sluckey added instructions _inside_ your message, read that.
> to add images to a thread or to a personal message
The image file MUST be hosted on a public server.
If the image is only on your machine, you must up-load it to a public server. I've used TinyPic (http://tinypic.com/) and Imgur (http://imgur.com/). Both are free. It is possible to upload an image "anonymously", without an account. For frequent use, it is much better to get a free account.
Drawbacks: TinyPic is now owned by PhotoBucket. I *hate* PhotoBucket. TinyPic is now doing "Captcha" even for logged-in use. Imgur recently said my browser was "too old".
Please avoid PhotoBucket. It is slow, it sometimes has links to suspicious files and pages, it has too many ads.
Upload image, grab the code they give you. PhotoBucket gives you a link to a PAGE with all their ads (you can't post that as an "image"). TinyPic and Imgur give you specific link-syntax for forum posting.

Yes, as the guys said above.
The image must be on a server somewhere on the web in order to wedge it into a post using the tags [img][/img]
Here is a link to an image on a server

Here it is between the img tags

I *hate* PhotoBucket
too bad... one of the two founders is a close friend - they sold out to news corp (fox media). :undecided:
-
I need an explanation
If I write a message and use the insert image function, the inserted image is shown in the middle of the message
I can precede and follow it with text
but if I load an image as attachment it is shown at the bottom of the message
----
Is possible to show the attached images in the middle of the message ?
sometime is better comprehensible an image if preceded and followed by text (and may be other images)
if this isn't an existing function, is possible to have it implemented ?
Thanks
K

You can't have an attachment appear in the middle of a message
Only an image on a server can appear anywhere inside a message area
-
kagliostro, some of these sites were already mentioned earlier in this thread, but here is a good, recent comparison of media hosting sites: http://www.tested.com/news/feature/3563-the-best-place-to-store-your-jpegs-and-gifs-six-image-hosting-sites-compared/ (http://www.tested.com/news/feature/3563-the-best-place-to-store-your-jpegs-and-gifs-six-image-hosting-sites-compared/)

> You can't have an attachment appear in the middle of a message
You can.
Compose your message. Attach the image. Post.
Hover over the text below the image, right-click, "Copy shortcut".
Now go back and EDIT the message. Put in your IMG tags, then paste the image shortcut between them. Save.

testing
PRR's image here
(http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=12597.0;attach=32557;image)
more text after the image
Haaa, I did not think of that.
I would add to PRR's post that your image should not be huge because it will swamp the screen
Notice that attached images are kept small until you click on them
I am guessing on this
You could even go back and delete your attatchment after you insert the image in line
Have to test that to see if it is true

Put in your IMG tags
I get all of it except, what are the IMG tags?
Brad :dontknow:
-
> what are the IMG tags?
If an image already exists on the public web, you can make it appear inside your post with the IMG tags.
Using the standard post/reply editor, have your cursor where you want the image, click the (http://www.el34world.com/Forum/Themes/default/images/bbc/img.gif) button above the typing box. (It's below the slanty I.)
All that does is insert the IMG tags (start and stop). You can also type the syntax by hand.
[img][/img]
Put cursor between the tags, and paste the URL of the image. For example: say you want the image http://www.tikiking.com/images/hana_lulu_page.jpg (http://www.tikiking.com/images/hana_lulu_page.jpg)
[img]http://www.tikiking.com/images/hana_lulu_page.jpg[/img]
will render this:

Many thanks PRR

attached picture has been deleted to save space in this post
Ok, it works
You can attach an image to a post, save the post, copy the properties of the attached image, add that to your post as and in line image, then delete your attached image to save space. No need to have double images on the same post, IMO
I'll add this to the forum how to board

Hi Doug
Thanks about testing this new method of image insert
I've a further question for you, if possible, Sometime ago, modifying a post (I don't remember where) I've seen on the line where there was the link of an image, some instruction as to resize the image
If there is an image that is too large is possible to insert a command as to resize it ?
Thanks again
Franco

I added instructions for adding images to post here.
http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=14521.msg137766#msg137766 (http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=14521.msg137766#msg137766)
Image resizing tips are in the Forum How to board, the same board as new post above is in
http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=464.msg137771#msg137771 (http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=464.msg137771#msg137771)
If the image is too large to upload to the forum, you must resize the image with your image software.
I use Paint shop pro
Other software would be photoshop
But the topic above shopws you how to use the width tag to change the size of an image that you have posted

Thanks Doug

> attachment and then deleting the attachment.
> attached picture has been deleted to save space in this post
> Ok, it works
Isn't working here/now.
I don't know if a user-delete actually takes the file off the server, or just removes the link and thumb from the post. I suspect the file is really removed, immediately or deferred until a garbage-collection routine.
It may still work for _YOU_ because you saw it, it is cached in your browser, and your browser isn't re-checking the server.
-
> resize the image -- Paint shop pro -- photoshop
A free alternate is IrfanView www.irfanview.com (http://www.irfanview.com)
There is also The Gimp, but this is like a 13,000 piece tool-kit to screw a lightbulb.
-
Yeah, my cache could have been holding the image, it's gone now
So it looks as though SMF deletes the file when you delete the attachment from your post
-
OK, the image must not be deleted
About the use of a program to resize the image, I understand that can be done
but the question was principally referred at the use of an image linked from the web, not my PC
so the instructions to show it resized are useful
thanks
Franco
-
yes, just use width=xxx for that
-
> an image linked from the web, ....so the instructions to show it resized are useful
But be kind to those of us with long (slow) wires.
This image is coded to display at 100px wide, but your browser has to download the whole 1980x1200 (2.7 MEGAbytes) to display it.

-
So the action of the comand width=xxx is on the computer of the member who is looking to the image
The width=xxx just tells your browser what width to make the image on your screen
The image is still there on the server at the original width

thanks for the confirm
