Title: Best way to fry an OT?
Post by: Madison on November 08, 2011, 08:37:12 am
The best way must be through human error, insert me!
Comments and experiences?

I guess I made a boo boo.
I grounded the cathode of my power tubes on a 5E3 build by accident.
I didn't realize until too late.
It must have fried the OT?
Make sense?

After finding that problem, the OT sounded like blocking distortion galore, weak weak weak at high volumes.......if this is what a fried OT sounds like?
Tried everything.

Finally.
I happened to have another OT in the parts box.
Sounds fine now.
New one on order.

I know you guys never make mistakes like this..........

OT's are a rare delicacy. I see far more fried PT's.

Never fried an OT yet but done the PT though. When I was younger, I've actually blown power tubes up.  :icon_biggrin:

I accidentally wired 120V into the filaments.  That was fairly exciting.  Lamp limiters are cool.  No harm done.

wire all pre amp tubes in reverse rotation or backwards on 1st build took out the PT.  Should have listened to Richard because the lamp limiter saved a few other projects on start up afterwards.

Intellectually, I know that an OT can be fried by running it with no load. I wouldn't do such a thing, but I have unquestionably done so in the past, and never fried one that I can recall.

Yeah, I've been getting to ballsy on my start ups.
Need to remember to get out the limiter.

I was using a MUSIC MAN 100W head to drive a TRAYNOR YBA-1A via the line out, with no loads hooked up to. I gigged a couple of times b4 the music man's OT died...no wonder why . What tone I had, though. Just a dummy load would have saved me the cost of a new OT installed.
