I had to go inspect an abandoned house today out in the middle of nowhere before a cleaning crew came in to clear it out. In one of the backrooms there was an old Baldwinn Organ. I only had a few minutes to take parts of off it, but I was able to grab some stuff. I really wanted the whole thing, it was in surprisingly good shape, but I had no way to get it home. At least I was able to get something off of it before it went to the dump.
I am not exactly sure what I got, but other than a big box of tubes, it looks like I got a power stage with a tube rectifier and a pair of 6V6 tubes, and what I hope is the vibrato unit.
Now I need to figure out what I am going to do with it!
Here is what I got:

most of those tubes on the oscillator bank are 12AX7. nice score.

-
Ya they are almost all 12AX7
Here is 1 more pic:

Nice score! I probably would have left the feet though.
-
I had to bring the feet with me, hairy legs too.
So is that the tremolo I got? Seems like I saw a thread about converting one to a stand alone guitar effect.
-
Be very carefull all that stuff is radio active I think you should send it to me so I can dispose of it properly for you.
 :happy1: :l4: :guitar1
-
Did you save the speaker also? They are often a nice alnico 12 or 15, often 10 as well.
-
It had a pair of 12s. They had transformers on them. I didnt have time to pull them.
Still not exactly sure what I got...
-
Very nice source of many interesting components
looking also to second importance pieces, did you noticed those nice lowered octal sockets ?
those are parts that can solve some mounting problem, but I don't think you can order it anywere now
Kagliostro
p.s.: nice feet did you recovered it with the organ or have it as personal equipment :icon_biggrin:  :l2:
sorry I wasn't able to resist :icon_biggrin:
-
I've got the same guts from an old bladwin in my parts room.
The 12's that were in it wer likely Cletons, good speakers, but one is real dark sounding and the other real bright.
-
If possible I would like to use the power stage as a power amp for the preamp I want to build. Basically just have a 1/4 inch in and out, with a volume knob. I have the tubes for it, so I figure why not. I would just need to build a chassis for it and figure out what the wires from the cut pigtail do.
What is the other chassis? The one with 30 sockets. (30 sockets!!!)

Doh! Those mighta been the OPTs on the speakers. Looks like there might be OPT's on the underside of the chasis, hard to tell from the pix. So you got 1 chassis with a PSU and a power amp(s) sans the OPT's (maybe). The other chassis was the oscillator bank, stuffed full of 12AU7's. They did make an oscillator with 12AX7's too. There might be a vibrato circuit in there too. It appears to have a PT as well. Slice em up, break out the lamp limiter and test them. Unfortunately Baldwin was very tight with their schematics but you're really in it for the parts. Pretty cool score.
-

Clearly, that one is the oscillator and percussion chassis and divider. Boy, looks like you got your plastic-encapsulated cap supply covered for a while! I would have to guess that the six coils are dual-pitch (like A and B-flat) and the rest is percussion. You might be able to use that chassis for a geetar amp if you gut it. Nice score! On one hand, I feel kind of bad taking an old organ apart, but truly, it wasn't such a great thing to begin with (not a Hammond, by any means) and repairing it would prolly be a full-on nightmare, meanwhile a $250 keyboard can probably devastate it 15 ways to Sunday. And...if you don't have (and can't get) the coils/modules that plug into those rectangular sockets (I am sure you could get them if you cared to) then you have plenty of nothing other than parts anyway. Well done!
-
If I wanted to rent/borrow a truck and drive 200 miles one way I could get the whole organ. Assuming the clean-up crew hasnt already taken it to the dump.
Hopefully I can get the power amp working for what I want. The oscillator will get stripped for parts.
The tubes are mostly 12AU7, a bunch of CBS and other misc brands. There are 2 6v6 and a couple others. 68 tubes in all.
I will make a list later...
-
Here is a list of the tubes I got:
6L6GC Raytheon x2
5U4GB Raleigh Lifetime Japan x1
12X4 Sylvania x1
12AU7 Raytheon x18
12AU7 no name x1
12AU7WA Cornell x1
12AX7A RCA x1
12AX7 CBS x30 (WOOT!!)
12AX7 Japan x1
5963 Cornell x8
5751 Raytheon x1
Not too bad for free!!! Plus the power amp has Malory caps.
-
I Scored Today!!!
I was thinking it would have been a conversation like us dudes had in high school.....
That Raytheon 5751 is a great find in itself.
If the Japan 12AX7 is Matsushita (Very likely) they are some of my favorites.
-
Are Raytheon tubes in general a good brand? What about CBS?

Both are typically re-branded GE tubes. Personally, I'd rather have a used old tube than a brand new Russian tube.

can i get an amen!
-
Well then I am stoked that I got about 70 used old tubes and wont have to buy any new russian ones!
Looks like I am going to end up with an empty chassis that has 28 9pin sockets in it. HMMMMM.... what amp uses the MOST tubes????
-
Vox AC30 1978 (with reverb) uses 13 tubes
4 in the Power Amp and 9 in the Preamp
it has not a rectifier tube, but if you want you can add one so you have a 14 tube amp
at the moment don't remember other amps with more tubes (in the preamp)

LOL. Why has THAT question never been asked before?
-
HMMMM That would be pretty sweet!
I had to have a little fun with this thing before I strip it. So I got out the wifes nice camera:

:dontknow:
I did work on one a few months back that was a custom built amp that appeared to be built in a Silverface chassis (probably Super or Bandmaster Reverb). It had two Blonde-era Fender Channels each with an extra stage of gain, Tube Reverb, Two tube Trem/vib, Tube Buffered Effects loop. Add Phase inverter, 5AR4 Recto, and a pair of 6L6 and it was stuffed. It had 9 12A_7's, 2 6L6 and a 5AR4, it didn't reach that late AC30 for tube count but I think it beat it for "population density".
I reluctantly took it in on repair, luckily all I found wrong was trouble with the Reverb tank.

>what amp uses the MOST tubes?
My personal best 17. That picture is way sexy.
-
Well it looks like I have to go back out to that area tomorrow. I may have to make a stop to see if the organ is still there, or if its been hauled away already...
-
Man if your out there, and have enough time, get those OT's/speakers.
As long as you wont get in any trouble. :w2:

-
Thats the cool thing. There is no trouble to get into. Its an abandoned home and I have a set of keys for it.
Hopefully I can go by, and hopefully the organ is still there. And hopefully I have a little time.
I bet that it has reverb too..... :w2:
-
I only say this because you have a wife and children and -- You got the tube amp Fever -- , not worth it if dad gets in a bind. :w2:
On the other hand, why not if it's just going to the dump?
My $0.02 is, Family first, my/me/dads stuff 2'nd. Things will come and go, but not mama and the babes.
I wish you well brother.
Brad :icon_biggrin:
-
Your absolutely right. Its not worth getting into trouble for.
-
A couple of OT's and speakers won't get you into anymore trouble, you need them, However try to avoid bringing every orphaned organ home (like Me) unless you have aremote storage space.
-
I was able to get a few more parts today.
I got the speakers. One of them has a hole where it got poked. But I thing it can be fixed with tissue paper.

And I got 5 of these boards for parts:

That was a Mine not an organ !
Would like to know what are those intriguing little "transformers"

lol I did that for a while, we have a two-car garage but I still hate to have them wasting space. Got it down to a science now though. Get it home, strip it down, harvest what I want, post the scrap metal and even the scrap wood for free on CL (always gone in a day). Sell off what ya don't want (I usually make a good $100 on parts), and enjoy your new stash :)
Nice find blown240! Got me hittin' CL already, could use a fresh one
-
Those "transformers" are all wound on the same laminations, aren't they?
-
The 4 little ones are. And the 2 bigger ones are independent. Why?
-
You scored the vibrato inductor.
-
What piece is it?

Well SHOOT! In that case I scored 6 vibrato inductors

Here are a few more pics:
Is this speaker worth fixing? It does have the correct plug to go into the power amp I got:

Is this speaker worth fixing?
Sure, why not? Do the tissue paper trick. Worst-case, you have a test speaker that you don't have to worry about blowing up.
-
That's a good point. I wish I knew more than I do about electronics in general. I really want to make a vibrato effect with one of these boards. But the write-ups are way over my head.
-
Glad you made it out of there and back home safe.
Hey, I thought you said there were transformers bolted on to the speakers? I don't see them?
Does anybody know which model this is so we can all see the schemo? Is it in Doug's tube amp library, if not would someone please post it?
Brad :icon_biggrin:
-
I just got a quick look at them the first time. What I thought was a trans was just an odd voice coil. The OT is in the power amp.
It's a baldwinn orgasonic. I don't think a schematic is available. Man I wish there was.
-
hi ..
nice find ..can you send those 6l6 s over here
..just kidding ..
well butter fingers tom.. broke a baldwin 6l6 tube on my orgasonic last week ..
the sound from my organ is very nice ,, even with the age ..ill fix it after christmas
one thing though,, it does not look the same as yours.5 tubes on each board 12au7 and a 12ax7
.. i am glade everthing worked out for you ..
-
This one is 5 tubes per board as well. Do you have a schematic for yours? I would really like to see one.
-
sorry no schematic ..
but yours is a different model..
.. chassis number 613 i believe ......less jammed then yours ,,with seperate units for delay and bass pedal
mine is 61AP. and it came with a tube placement it indicates which tubes are for what,,, near my amplifier section ..the
8' pedal divider ,,
pedal divider amplifier& clipper ,,
amplifier phase inverter ,,
vibrato&remote cabinet cathode follower..etc.
there must be that basic schematic...for yours .
mice and organs do not mix well
free organs,,, oh well
tom,,,, now back to rebuilding a few amps ..lowery organ amp 6v6 for a guitar amp and ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, its 11;oo just found another free working well baldwin ,, please 6l6 please .
