Title: $#i^ oldtimer setting in.
Post by: DummyLoad on January 01, 2012, 08:17:10 pm
/ begin rant
ok, so i'm flat out of 100nF 600V caps and the build i'm working on requires four. i go online with a mission to order 100nF 600V caps; i wind up ordering over a dozen line items and it's everything BUT 100nF 600V caps. uff-da!

 :BangHead: :BangHead:

this is happening more frequently as i get on in years - growing older sux. i have no idea why anyone would call them the "golden" years.
end rant /

I got to ask,
just for my own perspective of course...
How old are you?

At about 47/48 I had to have a list for all stores I would go shoping at.    :dontknow:

Happens to most if not all.

I can remember intimate details of things that happened to me as a kid on up to about 10 years ago.  I can quote any music trivia you can throw at me.  But I can not remember someones name that I just met or shopping lists...  Don't feel like the Lone Ranger!  Any more a golden day is when I wake up on the top side of soil.... :icon_biggrin:

I forget stuff like that all the time. I make a list and lose that.

I know you are not looking for advise but here is some anyway....
I start a shopping cart for the parts but don't place the order until the end of the day. I'll try to get the order in before the deadline for that days shipments.

For the last couple of years I've kept a file named "PARTS.txt" on my desktop, containing names/specs of parts, what project they're needed for and roughly grouped by the source they'll be bought from (eventually... shipping to AU is $$).
I try to reference it when ordering stuff in case there's something small I need for a project that's on the backburner that can be thrown in with the more urgent order.  :dontknow:

I have always used list
I don't like the feeling of having to try and remember a bunch of different things
My brain feels cluttered
It feels way better to just know that all I have to do is grab a list and I am covered

Here's one that happened last week
I had an order with a 17" piece of board
So I go into the board cutting room and cut a 19" piece of board
I cut the board and then I look at it and go, that looks too long
So I measure it
Ok, crap I cut a 19" piece of board

I go back into the board cutting room to cut a 17" piece of board
Yup, I cut another 19" piece of board

I finally got it right on the 3rd try

I do that stuff all the time when building cabinets!
This is in cm so it gets even worse; 10 inches is like a mile but 10cm isn't much.
(I work in both types of measurements)

ie.
I'll need a 55cm piece of wood and I will go 10cm to short or long.I just somehow end up seeing the last five and not the first.
Long is not as bad a short!

It's really a terrible feeling when you realize it later after all the pieces are cut!
I have lot of small pieces laying around the shop.

I am 43 going on 50 something?

19" boards become 9 + 9,  10 + 8, 11 + 7, 12 + 6, etc

The most that will be scrap is an inch

I should sell all the small scrap pieces by the pound
A bunch of them could be made into bias boards or small relay boards

Got a bucket of scrap from many years of cutting the board

I think of aging and memory sort of like this.

When you're 21, you have 3 file cabinets to search thru to retrieve information.

When you're 61, you have 9 file cabinets to search thru to retrieve information.  Takes longer because there is more to sort thru and to keep track of.

And then there is the issue of wisdom and knowing how to enjoy life and people that can be a benefit of aging and personal growth if someone is willing to show up and do the work to make that happen.

I have a friend, Allen, that is 75 yrs old and absolutely the most courageous and gutsy guy I've ever known.  When he turned 75, he got on a bike in Asheville and rode it out to Kitty Hawk (NC outer banks). It is important to note that he did not train for this and is not a cyclist.  When he turned 65, he walked 1100 miles on the Appalachian trail alone. Took him months and months to do it.   I would not have the mental toughness to have done either of those at any age.  I've never seen him afraid of anything.  He has zero health problems and his spiritual insight and personal wisdom is just remarkable.  I've somewhat adopted him as my mentor. And his beautiful wife is just as cool as he is.  Plus he is outrageously funny.

With respect, Tubenit

I don't think of myself as old until I look in the mirror. Some old wrinkeled up prune with gray hair looking back at me now! Latter this year I will be getting on Medicare! All you have to do is live, and you just get old  :dontknow:

Getting old beats the alternative.
