Title: Naylor Special Design 50, 12"? Anybody ever try one? Yeh or Nay?
Post by: Willabe on January 12, 2012, 06:37:49 pm
I bought this speaker a good 10 years or so ago and have it in a BF PR. Seems a little on the bright side to me? Might be the PR? I
only played out with it once and it was kinda bright comparied to my clone tweed Deluxe that has a Kendrick black frame 12" in it. I know the 2 amps are apples to oranges.

Anybody here try one?

That's the Reverend one, right?  A friend of mine has one in his DRRI.  I liked his enough that I got to digging around for info on it and I found some chatter on the internet about that speaker being the same as the Weber Signature Ceramic 12B.  Since the Reverend is discontinued and fetching ever more ridiculous prices on Ebay, I went with the Weber for $50.  They are both most likely built be Eminence, use the same basic language to describe them (American magnet and frame with British cone) and look and sound pretty much the same.  There might be a difference but we couldn't detect one.  Anyway, as far as the Weber goes, I really like it.  I have more midrangy speakers that I've been using more lately, but I like it for a nice, well balanced tone.  Can get bright without being piercing and has plenty of bottom.  To my ears, probably, the most transparent speaker I own.    I have it in a Lopoline cab at the moment but I keep threatening to swap it with the 12F150 I have in my DRRI.

Thanks Chris for the info. Sorry I took so long to post back and thank you.

I don't know. It doesn't say Reverend on it. I'll have to try an A/B it again with some different speakers and pay a little bit better attention.

I think I bought becase of good reviews in VGM years ago.   :dontknow:

                Thanks,     Brad      :think1:

Sorry, I was thinking of the Reverend Alltone 1250.  I don't know anything about the Naylor special designs.

Do you think it is broken in yet (you said you only played it once)... break it in and then see if it
is too bright.

No, I've played it a lot at home, I only played 1 gig with it. I think it's when I have in the BF PR that it's too bright for me.

I need to run my 5E3 through and see what I think.      :dontknow:

I'm trying/breaking in a tubby tone 12", alnico, hemp cone right now, and so far, this thing sounds great to me.
