Title: Where to buy carbon film resistors in large quantities?
Post by: phsyconoodler on February 14, 2012, 04:03:57 pm
Where is a good place to get large quantities on Carbon film resistors? It's a major pain to look them up at Mouser!
And the prices are not great either, even at the 200 per point.
Anyone have a nice source they would like to share?

there is a store here in Montréal called Addison, and they carry large quantities of carbon comp resistors, the only problem is that they have odd values like 69.5k, 206k, 79k5......see what I mean ? The good news is that they are C H E A P .

Oops I am sorry, you are looking for carbon film, not carbon comp resistors.......

Don't overlook hamfests--old farts are constantly parting out tubes and componets from the days of yore. New hams don't know what to do with them.   I picked up a great big sorted selection of carbon film 1/4 watt resistors once ("sorted and labeled" for next to nothing!).  It is hit and miss but there is always something--even just to chat with these guys is worth a trip.    Jim

I get them at Radio Shack.  They sell then in 1/4 watt and 1/2 watt in 500 qty assorted and 1000 assorted.  The 500's cost 6 dollars at my local store.  The assortment is pretty good as well.  They pack more of the common values in the package.

OOPS, sorry I did not notice you were Looking for large quantities.

I don't know, I haven't really found anything that can compare to Mouser/Digikey/Newark when it comes to price on quantity components.  I just went on Mouser and found ½ watt 10kΩ carbon film resistors in under a minute, and I don't see how you are going to beat 100 @ $0.05 a piece for the brand name, and $0.03 each for the cheap Chinese version.  Buy 1,000 and the prices go down by half.  It was about 40 seconds on Digikey, for very similar prices.  I'm sure you could get them cheaper from the manufacturers, but you'd probably have to buy 10,000 of them, which strikes me as a bit much.

If I had a problem finding stuff on Mouser, I just called them and tell them what I wanted. They always fixed me right up. Better yet, just order a catalog. It's huge but far easier than dealing with that web site.

I think it's just a matter of getting used to the website.  It takes a while to learn, but once you do it is a very powerful and fast way to find what you are after.  Particularly after they added the interactive sort thingy so you can see if what you need is available without waiting for the whole screen to reload.

Certainly, if I know exactly what I need, I can find it faster on-line.  The catalog is only better - for me, at least - if I'm trying to figure out what I need.  You know, "I need a switch of some sort, but I don't know what kind!"  But for resistors and caps and such, the search engine is much faster.
