Title: 6v6 problems
Post by: EKDENTON on March 25, 2012, 09:48:03 pm
Hi Guys. Been a long time since I have been on the forum. One of my SS amps burned up so i installed my 6v6 plexi 18 watt into the cab.
The 18watt i put in always seemed to work fine. Now when I try to use a distortion pedal the amp sounds very bad when playing individual notes. They sound very ... hmmm how can I describe the sound ... not scratchy maybe like a bad sounding rattle. I do not notice it when playing a chord but it may be happening and I am just not hearing it as clearly as when playing a single note.I tried several pedals, nothing changed. Then i changed preamp tubes and that did not fix it. I changed power tubes and nothing so far has helped. It sounds fine with no effects pedals. Could this be a bad capacitor or something? Any ideas on where to look first?

Can you remove the chassis and try it alone, perhaps with a different speaker/cabinet?

You'll want to be sure the electronics are fine. Was the speaker left over from the SS amp? Rule that out by using a different speaker (preferably a different cabinet you can plug into).

I once had a cabinet that had a buzzy rattle on Low E/F. Amp was good, speaker was good. Turned out to be a crack in the cabinet itself. So that's why I suggest removing the chassis and trying a different speaker. Rule out all the new stuff.

Okay I will pull it tomorrow and check it with another speaker. Sounds like a good place to begin looking.

Might be a dumb question but have you used pedals with this amp before? (Some amps naturally take certain pedals better than other amps)

It was the pedal. I switched to a different distortion pedal and it is fine now. That should have been the first thing i checked.
