Title: R.I.P. Carroll Shelby
Post by: DummyLoad on May 11, 2012, 05:55:01 pm
When you think muscle cars and hot-rods, it's likely that you can't help but think of a few cars that were Carroll's.

Wow, what an icon of motorsports history.  Few single people have had the influence he has.

Sorry news indeed.

I met and dealt with Carroll a few times when I was living and working in the Houston area in the late 80's.

I'll never for get answering the phone:
Me: HP Racing my I help you?
rough voice: Git me Hutton.
Me: (yelling) Hey Harold! pick up the phone!
Harold: Who is it? I'm busy!
Me: Hutton's kinda busy, let me take a message.
Rough voice: You Tell Harrled to git his narra ass on the phone. this is Carroll.
Me (yelling again, loudly)(laughing) hey Harold! this guy says his name is Carol (thinking it's a girls name)
At that moment I'm looking at an AC Cobra being CAREFULLY pushed out of an enclosed trailer in the front parking lot. it all kinda clicked all at once!

There are some kickass cockpit videos of Cobras being raced on utube.

Man it looks fun...if it weren't dangerous.

wait...what?
if you guys like ironic hotrods, check out videos of white zombie, built on a 1972 datsun 1200.
you laugh and wonder about the owner's sanity til he proceeds to blow away various juiced-up porsches, corvettes, BMWs and police interceptors.
fun!

Maybe it's just me, but I think going 120 in a tiny convertible with a tube frame and an AL body is not like driving to McDs.   :icon_biggrin:

Not quite, add about 800lbs and double the horse power on essentially the same wheel base (65 AC Cobra)

R.I.P. Mr. Shelby.

I'll never forget seeing a real Shelby Cobra's in a friend's garage when I was in high school.  He didn't want us to touch it... not even look at it if possible.  Open the hood?  Forget about it!  Apparently his Dad was extremely protective of his high speed baby (think "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" crazy).

Here are a couple of pics of replica a buddy of mine built.

Cheers,

Chip
