Title: Goody Box / Capacitors
Post by: plexi50 on June 04, 2012, 10:55:17 am
I was wondering if these were good quality capacitors from back in the day. They are values we would use in tube amps. I went to the gas station this morning and the owner handed me a box full of tubes and early Radio Shack parts still sealed. Unreal. Something told me to go out.  :worthy1:

Aerovox had a good rep and were very popular in the radio/tv shops.

I inherited a bunch of Aerovox capacitors from the Physics department at the University of Pittsburgh, where I work. If they were using them, I'll bet they were top quality.

I've used a few so far in various builds and I can say, they always read right on the money, as far as value goes (and some must be pushing 50 or 60 years old.) They've all worked great. I'd say use 'em wherever you can!

BTW... I see Acushnet (who make golfballs), El Menco, Pyramid and other oddball caps from the same batch.  All seem to be pretty good.

Do they measure correct values?

I wish my gas station would give me caps too! LOL

Mine used to give S&H green stamps.

The Howard Taft S&H Greenstamp family used to dock there boat at our dock in palm beach in the 70's. The boat was bigger than the 50 ft dock. It was called the Rickador. S&H was cool. You could save up those stamps and buy just about anything with several full books

Those caps sure look good, a lot like the white mallorys. It's kind of nice having someone looking out for you on electronic stuff. I've got quit a bit of NOS resistors(some caps) I've accumulated last few years and I find myself using them when I come up short of parts in a build and use them to finish.

Yeah that was quiet unexpected when i went there that morning.  I finished a November build last month that sounds pretty good. I used Xicon caps in the tone circuit and coupling. I think i'll change them out with some of these and report back with my findings if any. The amp is a tad on the bright (sharp) side. These may smooth it out for a little more old Silvertone or Ampeg Gemini tone. Who knows. It's been a while since i did any cap comparisons
