After all I have experienced with this guitar, I'm going to just totally rewire it but before I do that I want to get a hint on how best to do it. I'm going to put the guitar into an almost stock wiring state, do the cleanest job I can, and then take pictures with a borrowed camera to try to show any problems that might cause the hum I referred to in the other post. Perhaps it won't even hum, but I'm doubtful on that. Anyway, I said almost stock wiring.
I have a .1 tone cap now and I'll keep that. No big deal. For me, the questions start with the switch position #3, the so-called "dark" preset. Ideally, I'd like it to sound pretty much like position #2 when it is rolled all the way down; I don;t want to try to emulate a bogus bass sound. I've tried the stock Esquire wiring (a long time ago, true) and I didn't like position 3 at all. What would I need to do to get position 3 to sound like the regular tone control rolled all the way down? I do not want a volume drop off!
I'm attaching the Duncan wiring diagram so you can see what I'm talking about. It's also the diagram referenced by the previously mentioned article.

I'd start by leaving the 0.05uF cap connected from the switch to the volume pot shell, and removing the resistor and other 0.05uF cap (the one that runs from the resistor to the "other side" of the switch).
To me, that looks like a tone pot with a 0.05uF cap, with the tone control all the way off.
