Title: Single Ended EL84 Ideas
Post by: gtrbryan on July 15, 2012, 01:28:32 pm
I have been out of amp building for quite awhile, but am finding myself drifting back into it.  I have acquired an old PA with a single ended EL84.  Any ideas for an amp?  I want something simple and bluesy, with Just a volume, tone and a Master.  I was thinking of using Weber's Smokin Joe but couldn't find any reviews on its sound.  Any ideas?

Would love some input about the best SE EL84 amps around here.

Mat's mini-HRM has a GREAT Dumblish tone to it!  This is probably the most impressive single ended EL84 amp I've heard sound clips of:

I built a SE using a paralleled 12AT7 (changed from ax7 for less distortion) into 5879 pentode feeding a 6v6. With a little lower voltage, an EL84 should sound really good as well. It's got a nice smooth sound at low volume and plenty of growl and volume when you crank it.
