I want to run two amps off one transformer. One PP 6L6 and one SE 6V6.
Can I build two seperate power supplies: one using SS diodes to get higher voltages for the 6L6s and one using a tube rect to drop the voltage for the SE 6V6 at the same time? Two independent amps and power supplies joined at the transformer?
The reason is, I really like the speaker driven reverb unit I built(basically a Champ). A also have a four 6L6 PA I converted to run with two 6L6s. So I have the two extra holes. I want to graft the reverb amp into it.
Ampeg had a bunch of amps with two output sections. They'd have a main amp driving the main speaker and connect a reverb tank to the speaker and send it to the second amp. But those amps shared the same power supply. I was just wondering if there was a problem using two seperate power supplies and using a tube rect for one and SS for the other.
Thanks
Jeff

Yes. I have done so in the past. I used a heavy duty switch though to switch the B+ from one PS section to the other one time.
You could forget the B+ switching and just use a SPDT to lift the cathode from each set of power tubes. Thats how i did my Peavey Classic 50 which uses EL84 & 6V6 power tubes. Seperate cathode resistors and bypass caps to set the bias for each set of tubes. . What transformer do you plan on using?

I used to sell an amp like that... just drop the switch completely from your schematic. Run the SS and tube rect at the same time... if your PS is large enough, there is no real reason to cut one off and on. If you want channel switching, do that at the preamp, it is much quieter and safer (the switches are generally rated for less voltage AC than DC).
Just me $0.02.

Thanks
I don't want to switch between the two. I actually want to run both at the same time. Right now I play the main 6L6 amp, take the signal from the speaker to feed a reverb tank and plug the output of the tank into a SE 6V6 amp.
I just want to build the SE into the main amp. So they'll both always be on 6L6s for dry 6V6 for wet. I need to use SS diodes to keep 6L6 voltages the same and tube rect. to drop voltages for the 6V6.
The transformer originally ran four 6L6s so I think it'll handle two 6L6s and one 6V6.

Why would you want to associate yourself with the devil?

I just thought that picture was kinda cool looking, and just thought the # of posts was funny and ironic.
I'm in no way whatsoever aligned with satan or evil, nor do I endorse satanism or devil worship in any form.
I thought the picture was a cool piece of art. If you find it offensive in any way I'll remove it.
I'm no more evil than a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner or a can of Red Devil Lye
(which is only evil when Howlin' Wolf's woman mixes his drink with a can of it)

I was just curious. I would have never seen it because I have avatars turned off. But I had to take a peek when you made the '666' comment.

Meh, there's soooooo much art to choose from and it says below the avatar, "Tell'em I made you do it"? Do what? Lie, cheat, steal, abuse, rape, murder..... What's so cool looking about that???? :w2: :dontknow:
So why not just change it to something else? That drawing of Wolf is very cool, IMO.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
"Tell'em I made you do it"? Do what? Lie, cheat, steal, abuse, rape, murder.....
First off I want to say don't believe in or worship the devil. I don't believe anyone can make anyone else do anything. I do not condone or endorse lying, cheating, stealing, abuse, rape, or murder. I do believe everyone has free will. If someone lies, cheats, steals, abuses, rapes, or murders it's because they value themselves over anyone else and have total disregaurd for other human lives. Every human being on the planet physically has the potential to do any one of those things. What seperates good from evil is the human mind's capability for caring, compation and empathy. I believe every human being on the planet is responcible for thier own actions. If someone lies, cheats, steals, abuses, rapes, or murders it isn't because there is a source of evil controlling their actions. That revomes the humanity for being human. Shifts the blame of someones actions. If someone lies, cheats, steals, abuses, rapes, murders it's a result of their own pride, greed, envy, jelousy, ego, etc. and saying the devil made me do it is saying that people have no control over their own actions and reduces humanity to puppets. I don't know I just can't reduce the complexity and struggle of human life to - there's a good guy and a bad guy, and any time something goes wrong it's the bad guys fault, not ours. I guess "tell 'em I made you do it" was a turn on the phrase the devil made me do it. If something goes wrong, or someone does something evil you can either figure out why, what was the cause, or you can throw your hands up in the air and say the devil made me do it. Yes, there are evil people in this world that do evil things but I don't think it's responcible to say, "That's OK buddy, it's not your fault". That's all I meant by that. When I see a cartoon of the devil I see the fall guy for all the evil actions and evil deeds of evil men and all the ills of the world. I didn't stop to consider that's not what others see, So I'm truly sorry.
(....I don't know maybe Howlin' Wolf's woman ain't so bad. Maybe she didn't want to put poison in his coffee, maybe she didn't want to mix his drink with a can of red devil lye. Maybe the devil made her do it.)
So again, I do not worship the devil and I am sorry if anyone took offence and I've removed the picture.
I don't want to turn this into a religious discussion so let's get back to talking about tubes.
Truly sorry if I offended anyones religious beliefs

Like you and Sluckey said. I just don't think it's funny. :dontknow:
I never said anything before, but since you brought it up? (I also would defend your right to free speech if you keep it.)

You're right, it's not funny. It was a stupid, thoughtless thing to write. I don't got it all figured out yet, still got a lot to learn, and sometimes something comes along to shine a light on my ignorance and makes me think a little more about the things I say and do.

Me too buddy, me too. And they all said "Amen".

No. I'm not going to split the preamp.
-The preamp will go only to the 6L6 power amp section.
-That will feed the main speaker for my dry sound.
-From the speaker I'll use a resistor to get an appropreate signal to feed a reverb tank's input.
-The tank's output will feed the 6V6 amp.
So the 6L6 drives the dry speaker/no reverb(basically what I have now).
And the 6V6 drives the wet speaker/all reverb.
I don't need the reverb to be as loud as the dry(I don't do surf) so I think a PP 6L6 dry/SE 6V6 wet works well.
[Guitar]-[preamp]-[6L6 PA]-[speaker(dry)]--resistor--[reverbtank]-[reverb preamp]-[6V6 PA]-[speaker(wet)]
