Title: 6973 tube anyone?
Post by: terminalgs on August 20, 2012, 06:12:12 pm

A year ago there was a post to see if anyone had tried the EH 6973.  there wasn't much response,  so I thought I'd new topic/bump it.  There are a lot of old Valco and Magnatone amps with 6973s, so I had high hopes.

I can only find threads in hifi forums,  and those guys aren't impressed.   anyone here try them?

Funny that this should be mentioned right now.  A friend brought me an old amp, which I'm not sure of the brand. It has a pair of the 6973s in PP output.   I was at the Schematic Heaven site for an hour trying to match a schematic for this amp.  I looked in the "bargain basement" section, which is likely where I may find something.  So far, nothing found which has three 12AX7s in the preamp section etc, but I did find one with a trem, which this one doesn't have.  Then again this amp may have been messed with etc  The one I found is a Valco 510-54.
If this amp was mine, I would toss the 6973s for something else.  The price on those when I looked was 54 bucks each, more than the amp is worth.....

I couple year ago, I converted an old amp PA that used 6973's to a Supro 6424 amp (without the trem).  I used EH 6973's and have been pleased.
