ISSUE: This guitar causes speaker cones to vibrate excessively, with vol past 5 on the dial. This issue existed both before AND after the repair; and with more than one amp/speaker combination. Any suggestions to address excessive speaker excursion?
Just repaired a vintage Kramer Bass guitar - aluminum neck. A real beauty. 1 PU, 1 vol, 1 tone. Looks to be a humbucker. Previously, someone installed audio taper pots (500K) -- bad idea; the audio taper took all the sweep out of the vol & tone controls. There was also a treble bleed cap on the vol control, which I removed.
I installed an RS Superpot 500K for vol (this is a custom made supposedly hi-grade CTS pot); and a standard CTS linear 500K pot for tone. .022 cap from tone control to ground. (Also fashioned an aluminum back plate.)
Tried jumpering the outer legs of the vol control with various values of resistors to drop the pot value. Excessive speaker excursion persists. Maybe this puppy just wants a preamp or pedal for buffering?

Well all seems to be working well enough & the customer is happy: eye candy here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4434756623600.184625.1129726131&type=3 (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4434756623600.184625.1129726131&type=3)

No explanation available. The owner played it at a venue where we hold jam sessions, and he was very happy. Maybe he just kept the vol control low enough to avoid the issue. If he's happy, I'm happy. :icon_biggrin:
