Title: Need a new testing speaker
Post by: Madison on November 30, 2012, 07:05:14 pm
I have an Eminence Private Jack I have been using for over 5 years for testing and gigs.
I think I finally blew it the other day;it gets weird "chirps" or "bird tweets" at high volume.
I thought I smelled something electrical the other day when I got horrendous low end feedback.oooopsie.
Plus I suspect the speaker was probably on the way out anyway.

I really noticed how degraded the quality was when I plugged into a Brit Vintage 30, that I never, use to compare.
The old Vintage sounded good.

I remember when I first got the Private Jack, I did an A/B with the Vintage 30 and could hardly tell the difference.

Anyways.......

I am just looking for a pretty inexpensive speaker for testing/playing for about $100.
I try to keep the testing speakers pretty neutral.

My distributor carries most of the Eminence and Celestion Ferrite magnet series.

Any input?

I was given some Line6 Flextone? labeled Celestion 75 watt? 12" speakers (8 ohm)....I'm using one as a test speaker at my bench because I'm too cheap to buy a speaker I want, and too confused by all of the available options...they actually sound pretty good with a jcm 800 or trainwreck, which are the only 2 amps I've tried with them...supposedly they have a very flat response
Anyway,,,if you'll cover shipping I'll send you one to try

It's a cheap way out....if you need something to get by for now, they are just sitting here,,,,,and if you like it, keep it...I got it for free anyway.

UPS picks up at my shop every week day....I tried to use their calculator, but it wouldn't show me a price......your guess is as good as mine,,,,and maybe the cost of shipping makes it not worth it  :dontknow:

Thanks bro for the very generous offer.
Not worth the shipping charges to Japan and your time spent messing around with it.
Maybe a few years ago yes but shipping has become outrageous, unfortunately.

I am good for the moment and have other speakers around to get me by.

I'll probably just nab a $100 speaker and be done with it.

Likely a Private Jack but I have no idea what the newer Vintage 30s are like?

Prefer US made in a situation like this.

I have no idea what the newer Vintage 30s are like?
Yeah, I got so used to the 2-4K? hump in the V30 that nothing else sounds like "my sound" to me...the new ones sound very close "to me", but it's hard to tell without being side by side

But I realize NOW that I spent a lot of time trying to dial out that hump, and had no idea what i was doing in my 20's and 30's

I used a 4x12 bottom for 15 years and had nothing but the V30, so I have no other real experience...I was talking to the guy at Guitar Center about putting in a Celestion demo WALL......he agrees it's a great idea, but will never happen.....how cool would that be?.....I miss the old school mom and pop music stores we used to have.....I'm pretty sure one of them would have let me build the wall.

Don't miss these demo's if your trying to make an edjucated decision:

The Chinese V30's don't have the "woody" timbre of their British manufactured namesake.  Not only that but they remain stiff and lacking in low end even after hours of high volume pounding.  But for amp testing purposes--they will hold up well. Jim

What did you ever wind up gettin', Mr. Madison?

It would be pretty funny if you are in the far east buying American speakers, and we're over here buying from over there  :undecided:

Why not try WGS Speakers? Nice product for low prices.
