I did that 36 years ago. My first "guitar amp" was a cassette recorder that I recycled but I did it differently than the article in the link. On those old pre "auto record level" cassette recorders you adjusted the recording level with the volume control. So I hacked together a guitar cord into a 3/8" mini jack and plugged my junky pawn shop special guitar into the mic input. I lopped off the earphone from its cable and connect that to a 12" speaker I had salvaged from my dad's old hi-fi. The speaker was mounted in a cardboard box. Grabbed an old cassette tape and cut it so that it would run forever. Popped the cassette in the unit, pressed "record" and dimed the input level. I'm sure that today I would consider it pretty gnarly sounding but as a 16 year old I was thrilled with the tone.
