Title: HBP - Chet style pickin'
Post by: tubenit on March 05, 2013, 05:25:46 am
My friend and amp building mentor, HotBluePlates did this tune with his new guitar and the Standel type amp that he built.

I am a HUGE fan of Chet Atkins and have a bunch of his CD's .................   so I'm digging this playing alot!

With respect, Tubenit

It's Chet. And a Gretsch. You'll probably have to pay!  :icon_biggrin:

Ok, I got the welcome page AGAIN!!!!  I did a quick search and the song popped up.  Wow, that was too cool!  I've always admired people who can play that way.  My ham-fisted approach is so far removed from that.  Great stuff!

Oh hell... You guys are listening to the quick scraps that are just meant to be samples!

I'm not comfortable recording myself yet, and I think that shows. But do check out the post in the Guitars board (http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=15228.0)... these samples are the "before" ahead of me swapping pickups, installing a new nut and U.S. Bigsby, a new bridge, and correcting the bridge-base to guitar-top fit.

After we get this done and before and after samples complete, then I'll actually try to tweak the amp controls for a good sound. The present setup is just a compromise middle-ground to allow us to hear the differences in the stock pickups and TV Jones stuff.

Thanks for all the kind words though; I definitely screwed up Maybelle towards the end, and I'm not very satisfied with this copy of Jiffy Jam.

Wow!
HBP, I never knew you played (no offense like some of the other threads).
I knew a bit about your Gibson experience and you are great with amps but sheet mon!
Good pickins!
You use finger picks or bare fingers?
Please post more sound clips.

Cool stuff

I never learned how to finger pick

I am getting into the swing of it now.
I almost.........don't like picks anymore in so many situations.

I just started to try to fingerpick about 2 years ago, right before my son was born. I haven't had much chance to work on it during that time. But it felt like learning to play guitar from the beginning again, as my hands just wouldn't do what I wanted them to do.

Right now I play with a thumbpick, and I don't have long nails on my right hand. That probably inhibits getting a tone that's as even as possible, but it's just not practical for me to have the long nails (even press-on) right now.

I almost.........don't like picks anymore in so many situations.

I'm finding that once you're comfortable with fingerpicking, and learn some approaches that you might not use in flatpicking, that you can get around to some licks easier and faster by fingerpicking. Like the banjo-roll lick at 1:25 on Maybelle (sorry I muddled it a little bit; I'll play it cleaner next time I record).

Man Your doing good HBP! Wish I could do that but at this point I'll just have to be happy listening to it. I love chets tone and your hitting on it. I forget what kind of amp he used? I've got one old album by him that shows an orange gretch with fake f-holes painted black on the guitar. One of my favorite is an album where he has a orchestra backing him up. You should be proud, you've accomplished much! Platefire

Yes that roll at 1:25 was what got to me the most.
Very nice!

I started fingerpicking about 2 years ago also.
A friend kept bothering me to teach him classical guitar, and I didn't even play classical!
So, I picked up a book, started reading music, and picking.
Really opened up a whole different world on guitar but moreover, got me out of years of being in a rut playing the same styles.
Writing became more fun.

Agreed about getting around a bit easier on the fretboard.

I haven't been able to master a thumb pick yet.
More power to you.
Probably okay for me though.
I am always afraid I will be out some where and not have a thumb pick and not be able to play!

Peace.

I've taken to having a thumbpick tucked in the string length from nut to tuner, like the guy below.

"The guy" is Buster B Jones, who along with Chet and Jerry, gives me an unattainable target to shoot for.

Be sure to watch the second video at 2:21 (I tried to link straight to that timestamp, but the forum wasn't having it).

Buster B. Jones, "Twister". Very rare and unique song performance, 1999. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O79EcB2iZ-w#)

WOW!
Buster is great. :worthy1:(I'm outta the loop here).
Thanks for clips .

Tommy Emmanual I think plays with a thumb pick too.

I am almost certain that I like Buster better.....like his style and the tone of nylons.
Just read he is gone.Too bad RIP.
