Post by: kagliostro on May 18, 2013, 10:51:09 am
A friend asked me about a Fender Mod

the Billy Zoom's mod used by Mike Ness (Social Distortion)

I've never hear about this mod and hope someone can give

a schematic or at last news about it

Many Thanks

You'd have to call Billy Zoom or Fred Taccone at Divided by 13.

Billy posted pictures of the change on the Gretsch forum in 2010 (http://gretschpages.com/forum/other-amps/-63-fender-bassman/27563/page1/), and said most everything was reworked.

However, the images were hosted on a website and they are no longer there. The website is unavailable, so the images are gone (even when using the wayback machine).

About it, Billy said:
"I charge $250 for the Ness Mess. It's not something for DIY. It involves removing and stripping the eyelet board, building an entirely new Bass channel circuit, replacing some pots, and also improving the Normal channel and phase inverter. I can do it in under two hours, but I've done well over a hundred, including half a dozen for Mike.

In other words, you could chase trying to replicate what he did, or use a blackface Bassman as a blank template for the most part and build what gives your friend the sound he wants.
