Title: Shake rattle'n'roll in Wellington
Post by: tubeswell on July 21, 2013, 05:32:59 am
Been swarming since Friday morning, but we had a doozy just after 5pm earlier this evening.  I was heading back from town on the motorway when it struck. Felt the the force of the sideways motion on the back wheels. Suddenly everybody else pulls off the road. I kept on driving. Got about halfway home to pick up dinner for the kids (at BurgerFuel) then all these fire trucks start rushing everywhere. Got home, turned on the news - reports of damage 1 or 2 injuries, no casualties yet. Got a feeling I won't get much sleep tonight.

Wow, that's amazing

Good thing the road did not explode or buckle while you were driving

I saw that on the news last night. Very glad to hear of so few injuries/casualties.    :w2:

You Kiwi's sure seem to be getting way more than your fair share in the last few years.

Will be keeping you and your country in my prayers.

My nephew was in the shake in ChristChurch 18 months back; that's 200 miles south of Wellington.

Pretty amazing events. Also _I_ found the building damage report very interesting (and VERY lengthy): http://canterbury.royalcommission.govt.nz/Final-Report-Volume-Six-Contents (http://canterbury.royalcommission.govt.nz/Final-Report-Volume-Six-Contents)

Be alert when you go in buildings. ChristChurch had several shocks. The buildings that fell (with large loss of life) in the Boxing Day shake, some of them felt "tender" after the shocks before. After the events of CC, your landlord ought to be real proactive about inspection and repair.

Went into town yesterday for the first time since last sunday's big one. I see there's the occasional 'stickered' building. I was very wary of choosing pathways without any overhanging verandahs old buildings etc.

I've got stuck in town at my daughter's uni-student pad (the trains aren't running) - The crush at Wellington Central Station that I have managed to avoid by hangin' with my daughter (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BRwlYUWCQAA1Zoq.jpg:large)

The motorway crush that I'm also avoiding for the time being

Glad you came through another one okay. I'd send you a mop, free,  if the shipping wasn't so much!
