I LOVE this song!!!!!
To me it's as close as you come to a "perfect song".
I had 1st heard it in the mid 80's after a drummer I was in a band with gave me a vinyl copy of the band (super group) KGB, they recorded only 1 LP, he had 3 copies, so he gave me one.
KGB was; Ray Kennedy/vocals, Barry Goldberg/keyboards, Mike Bloomfield/guitar, Rick Grech/bass, Carmine Appice/drums.
At the time I really didn't know it's writing history, still don't. Lot of people lay claim to it.
Here's the Beach Boys version;

Here's the Beach Boys 25th anniversary show, MR. Ray Charles at the helm!

And here's the KGB track with the (supposed :dontknow:) original lyrics Ray Kennedy wrote.

Yeah I like it too. MB acoustic work in the very beginning is real nice. Band has a nice feel together.
Workin for the Children is another good song on the KGB album, it's on you tube. Got a reggae thing goin on. Ray was a good singer.
Seems he wrote quite a few songs that where recorded by some big names. He was a sax player and was on some album tracks playing sax through the years.
I had no clue about the BB's connection for a long time.
