Title: Ruby Starr
Post by: Ritchie200 on December 12, 2013, 11:12:40 pm
I remember seeing Ruby the first time at the Cal Jam singing with Black Oak Arkansas (with the great Tommy Aldridge on drums).  She is most noted as the female backup singer on Jim Dandy to the Rescue.  A few years later I remember she opened for Black Sabbath with her own band.  Yeah, Black Sabbath!  I was not expecting much thinking she was just eyecandy.....but WOW!  Not only did she rock, she was awesome.  I happened to run across this video that is pretty good.  I have to say she was twice as good when I saw her.  She died of a brain tumor in 1995 while enjoying a successful Las Vegas stint.  She is one of the many minor acts of the 70's that are unfortunately forgotten.  What a voice.

I saw Black Oak at the Aragon (2nd act), 3 band bill, Ruby had her band Gray Ghost they opened, can't remember the main act. She came back out with Black Oak to sing on Jim Dandy. Get the feelin she was kind of a wild child, little bity thing with a BIG voice and BIG red hair.

I watched some live Black Oak vids a few months ago and they weird me out now, really the singer. They got some strange songs.
