Title: Allmen Bros Dickey Betts High Falls
Post by: Willabe on January 14, 2014, 12:25:47 pm
Melody, space, rhythmic and melodic phrasing, ie, statements and sentences played that tell the story, paint the vision to be conveyed to the listeners minds eye, not drowned in FX, nuance is everything, the care of and how and when and where a single note is delivered. Just because you can doesn't mean you should play it. Less is more.

When I hear the guitar lead and the keyboard lead, I see in my minds eye;

A single leaf (lead) floating down a gentile river (the band) flowing along with the bends and river turns, you can see the leaf start dancing on top of the rivers slightly choppy white capped waves as the river starts to speed up (in the narrower places and along the rivers bends and tight turns, rhythm accents and intensity, "leaning into it" "pushing it") the "stops" are like the leaf and the river running into the river bank in a tight turn or hitting a big rock/fallen tree and bouncing off and then going on again, until it gets to the "High Falls" and gets caught in the turbulence (you can see the white water of the rapids right before the falls, rhythm section accents) as it approaches,  only to go crashing over and down (descending triplet line, 1 and a, 2 and a,....) onto the rocks that lie below, then into the eddy pools at the foot of the falls. Then it finds it way out of the eddy pool and starts the journey once again down the gentile slow moving river. Just like life, well I could be wrong.

What do you see in your minds eye when you listen?

Well,,,,right now I just see my journey through a box of chocolate chip cookies....

 :d3:

Man,,,you really know how to "tap into it"
I'll be honest and say I haven't listened to that in the last 20-some years........nice resurrection

I DO get it.....I swear
And, I realize I've got a lot to learn

Thanks for being here and posting this great stuff!

I was just going to say - the 60's and 70's were not good to you, were they....

I do think you hit the nail on the head.  Joe Lynn Turner (Singer in Rainbow, Malmsteen, Purple, etc.... Backing vocals for Cher, Bolton, Waite, Joel, Rait, etc...) said the same, in a very crude fashion, "The difference between Ritchie Blackmore and Malmsteen, and all the other guitarists for that matter, is that Ritchie is all about melody, timing, drama, and telling a story.  Malmsteen and all the others just jack *** over the song like a pathetic dog marking his territory.  Ritchie's ability is what makes him a true artist."

There are very few contemporary guitarists who fall into this category.  Come to think of it, most, if not all, play Strats!

    Oops, I think I said too much.

is that Ritchie is all about melody, timing, drama, and telling a story.  There are very few contemporary guitarists who fall into this category.

Yeah, I think that's it, you have to say something and that's more than just being able to "do"/"play" anything you want. That's just the physical side of it. There's 2 sides to a coin, you need to be able to deliver the 2 different parts in different amounts but still both at the same time.

It's like being able to read, write and spell, you still have to make coherent sentences to make a page in a chapter of the story. Like a story it should be going somewhere and so it had to start from somewhere and it has to end somewhere. Now guys will be upset with me for saying this but that's why I never "got" the Greatfull Dead or any of the hippie jam bands that they spawned. If you "get" them and like them fine I just don't for the reason I'm stating.    :dontknow:

(If you want to see where there's solid documented research on this just go on you-tube and watch the South Park "Die Hippie Die" episode. :l2:)

To me the best soloist's build a solo not just wail away endlessly.

When I was in high school just starting into music we used to argue about who was the fastest, Clapton, no Johnny Winter, no Alvin Lee, no Derringer.

That really had nothing to do with "music". It probable had more to do with higher levels of testosterone in our youth and it had to do with us not really knowing the language of music. We couldn't hear it yet and we couldn't speak it yet.

So when some git-tar slinger let loose with a big slurry of blazing fast notes we were amazed that they could do that because we were just learning how to walk without tripping up.    :l2:

"A young horse want's to run but an old horse has been around oh so long."

To me that means that the young just run with no reason other than their young and have a lot of energy and just want to play. But the old horse while he can still run why should he? He needs a reason to run.

How is that slide work coming?  I'll bet you got it down pretty good.  Great tune and yes I too have not heard this in a while.

I do not know how many times I have seen the Allman Bros.  When I was a kid they used to play at Piedmont Park often and also they were the house band at the Georgia Terrace Hotel.  I did see Duane, but I was too young to remember. :icon_biggrin:

I did catch them with Warren Hayes and he is a great player.  Man, if you like their music I don't know of anyone better live.

There has to be great artistry in music as I have access to all the same notes, but mine don't come out that way.
