I saw him at the absolute peak of his prime at Buddy Guys club in Chgo, say 20 years ago. They had cleared out some tables from in front of the stage so people could dance and I went up and stood in front of him all night no more than 6' from him. They have a low stage there, only knee high. I was jammed right up to the stage and couples kept bumping into me but I didn't care. I was so close I could hear his voice and accordion without the PA's help.
He had his best band then IMO, lead guitar, Hammond/Leslie/electric piano, bass, drums and Wayne on Cajun accordion and lead vocals. After the show I was finishing a beer and was about the last person in the bar, I walk out the front door and there's his tour buss. So I'm standing there and the keyboard player walks off the buss and he starts talking with me. I drop a few names of old blues guys I had played for/with, ask him if I can buy him a beer he says sure. Says but let me go get Wayne and the rest of the guys (band) and then you can talk with them. :dontknow: I said sure!
So I bought the guys a round and we all sat on the edge of the stage and at a table right next to the stage and talked shop for, mmmm, an hour or so? I was sitting there with Wayne on my 1 side and the guitarist on the other. Then they bought a few beers and it was time to go home. Nobody chasing any girls or getting high just takin about music.

There is 1 thing I regret from that night, I should have asked Wayne if he had a nipple piercing like Stevie Vie? :l2:

Well, my step grandad was Willie Bougeois (not kidding) & I lived in New Orleans, DeRidder, Monroe and Bossier City Louisiana. I grew up catching crawdads with string and bacon. Been in real bayous. I dated Lorretta Ladeaux in 10th grade. This feels real familiar to me.
I love Zydeco! Laissez les bons temps roulez. Dig it.
Thanks for sharing that.  :icon_biggrin:

Very cool heritage you have.
I dated Lorretta Ladeaux in 10th grade.
Now that is a great name.
Glade you like it. It is a music with a deep and rich history but I can see I'm preachin to the choir. I love to watch them Cajon's dance.

Yes, quite a name huh?! :icon_biggrin: She was actually a really sweet girl.
I've been around the Cajun culture some and had good Cajun friends. I've got many sweet memories of my years in Louisiana. Did the crawfish boils, gumbo, crawfish etouffee'. Heard lots of Cajun french and Zydeco.
The times I spent in the woods, bayous and on the rivers was great fun! Caught armadillos by the tail, ran away from snapping turtles, shot lots of Cottonmouths. Actually had two pet alligators growing up. One in high school that I named "Spot" (like "see Spot run"). Fed it huge shiners that I seined up in a creek behind my house. Seen alligator gar longer than the Jon boat I was paddling. Great memories for a young boy & man to have had. Ones I am grateful for.
I don't know how "good" Zydeco music really is. But to me, it's just really really FUN music. I can't keep my feet from tapping when I hear it & want to just get up and dance (poorly I might add).

Sort of a funny side note ..............
When I traded in my flip phone for a (not really) "smart" phone ......... the guy at Verizon asked me how I liked the new phone.
I responded that I did not really consider it an upgrade ............. to which he responded "why don't you consider it an upgrade?"
I said, "because they could NOT transfer my personalized Buckwheat Zydeco phone ring from my old phone to the not so smart phone."

Yeah, it's dance music. Both the Cajun and the Zydeco and that's why it's great, that's the whole point of it. You can't help but start tapping your foot.
The Zydeco is the African Americans take on the Cajun music they heard including some of the Cajun music's instruments.
Tabs really good, got a great right hand, very good vocals for his music too. You can hear the blues in there as he plays Zydeco mainly.
But there's just something about the sound of a Cajun accordion with the melodies and timings they play on them. Toups has his rocked/blues up but I think it still has some/a lot of the old sound in there.
And man it sounds like you had a great time growing up down there all right!

Just tell them like Buckwheat would, "Don't Mess with my Toot Toot."

I never thought I would EVER agree with SG. However.... My first real introduction to zydeco was the accordion blasting out of the open doorways of the strip joints and transvestite clubs in Nawleens back in the early 80's. In direct contrast the next club would be smooth jazz or blues. While I don't dislike zydeco, my first frame of reference is kind-of coloring my view.
HOWEVER.... there is the Aphrodite of the Accordion:
Stand Up Comedy "Judy Tenuta" Part One Ladies of the Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8YTXQgYaX8#)
Tab Benoit - I love this guy! I have not heard his stuff in years! I remember reading about him in Guitar Player back in the 80's. Man, what a player!
You guys talk about music that moves you. Early ZZ Top has a lot of diverse influence before they got poppy and then all blues. I saw their World Wide Texas Tour back in 75(?). It was boogie woogie for two hours straight. NOBODY sat down for the entire show. Dimed super leads, a Les Paul, and a 120dB PA. One of my all time fav concerts.

Hmmmmm...... Lets see, sounds like it was your 1st real introduction to Zydeco alright but how did you know the difference between the stripe clubs and the transvestite clubs? :w2: Something's wrong very wrong here. :l2:

Well, I distinctly remember seeing girls in the strip club and YOU in the tranny club. Come on, help me out here!

Come on, help me out here!
Well, if YOU think that YOU remember ME in a trany club in a Norleen's club, I'm not sure there's any help I can give you, cause I ain't never crossed the state line into Louisiana, let alone crossed over/into the he/she line. (And Sluckey is wondering if I'm doing cow patty mushrooms)
Now I do know a good man that can help you, his name is Tubenit but you'll have to apply your self to what he says.
Which might include looking at guitar life from the other side which unfortunately might include Tele therapy for a while. :dontknow:

I'm sorry, but it has been proven in many university studies and rock and roll doctors agree - Telepathetic therapy does not work. It dulls the mind and the music...
