Title: Samick SM25B - 25W Bass SS - What you think about to use for a guitar tube amp
Post by: kagliostro on January 28, 2014, 05:15:51 pm
May be I can get a Samick SM25B - 25W Bass Solid State Combo amp on the cheap

What do you think about the use as a base for a guitar tube amp ?

I'm in doubt because of the bass reflex case

and of the speaker (that I can think was planned for bass use)

the only thing I know is that the speaker is a 10"

Thanks

It looks like there is a slotted port on the front of the grill. You could block that and cut a new port in the upper back panel so it would circulate air around the tubes. or just leave off the back panel and see if the speaker sounds good in an open back cabinet. You won't be able to do either until you buy it though. So there is a bit of a gamble/challenge there..."are you feeling lucky?"

Comments on Ultimate-Guitar.com --

"If the world was bombed with a nuclear missle this amp and the cockroaches would survive. I don't know how it takes such a beating."

"I have not had, nor has the previous owner, any problems at all with this amp. It's extremely sturdy and durable. You could chuck it through a window and it would be fine. Maybe."

A "project" apparently sold on eBay for 16 cents, see attached. The large images are no longer online, but you can see there isn't much inside. I'd worry about the heavier transformers of a tube amp on that cheap chassis.

If it still works, I'd be inclined to tighten the screws (it may have buzz trouble) and keep it handy for the day that all your other amps quit. Or the day you have a flat tire and don't trust the 99 cent jack which came with the car.

Haha.

I just bought 2 junker Peavey amps for $25 each. One, a Bandit 65 and the other an Audition Plus. They both sorta work, the cabinets are intact, I plan to strip and tubify them.

Wondering about this thing

I decided that to me that isn't a good base for a guitar tube amp
