I suspect it runs as a compressed-air engine. The plastic tube to the "air filter" supplies compressed air (or CO2) from the wooden box. It's clearly running at the end, without any mechanical connection, but the exhaust sound is dominated by rocker clatter. So I don't think it is any type of explosion engine, or even high-pressure, but low-pressure (and air/CO2 not steam).

 I agree about the workmanship. Don't know where spark plugs small enough could be found for that anyway !

I would vote for running on compressed air too.
Who wants to get the exhaust pipes sooty after all that work.
