Title: What two builds do you still want to do?
Post by: tubenit on April 08, 2014, 07:33:27 pm
Out of curiosity, ............ what two builds would you like to build that you have NOT already done before?

One of mine is the Supro 1688TN.  There are a few others I'd sure like to try out also.

With respect, Tubenit

All custom amp ideas here. Does this count?

1) A design that's a sort of Plexi meets Vox all-in-one (12AX7 stages paralleled w/ EF86 stage) which can all be dialed in together or on their own with a few personal flairs in the controls that I like and a ppimv.
2) One I designed for G-man called Double Dipper (but never built yet) is similar but simpler (12AX7 stage paralleled w/ EF86 > tone stack > recovery 12AX7) single ended w/ an EL84, but mine would be push-pull EL84s instead
3) My take on a Liverpool 30 has my interest peaked lately (but w/ power control and multiple stage preamp biasing)
4) Silverguns' phase inverter cf follower experiment sort of has my interest down the road too?

Wait...did you say only TWO???  :dontknow:   :l2:

1) Vox AC30 with ef86 channel and el84 + 6v6 power tubes (with blend control)

2) A small stereo SE amp using pentode/pentodes (5654 ??) on the preamp, about power tubes may be el95

A dual OT output, 4 6x6 switchable for half power running 10 watts per pair tube.  3 preamps, 1 EF86, 1 12AX7 and another with a 6sn7 with an overdrive section and reverb.  I have been testing the idea and it is a true 1/2 watt amp as going from 2 power tubes to 4 is handled by switching off one Output Transformer.  Also I have been using the ampeg 7199 phase inverter.  If I like all the things one by one, I plan to build it using realy switching for 3 preamps running at 10 or 20 watts all with available overdrive (the most difficult part) and reverb.

That is number 1.

Number 2 is simple.  I would like to make a replica of a V front super, exact except remove any potential hazards.  Always thought it was a very cool looking amp.

A simple 5E11 Vibrolux and then a Trainwreck with the early Van Halen sound specs

I'd like to sell my 5E3 Deluxe and build a 5E9 Tremolux. I regret selling the '55 Tremolux I used to have.

Anything with unusual preamp tubes, in oder to have a cheap supply of old-stock tubes for the amp. Especially preamp pentodes (got a ton of 6AU6's and 6AK5's sitting around).

Oh... and a breadboard. That's 3, but I could be tinkering the pentode amps on the breadboard so it only counts as 2.

2nd time modifying the post... I would love to build a Super Scaler for someone who could use it, just to hear the idea in practice (you could plug a Champ into a Super Scaler to turn the Champ into a ~50-60w amp).

I need to go back and make something real out of that PPICF project that jojo mentioned....ultra clean
AND
I've gotta do a Dumble ODS type for my personal amp to (eventually) take on stage...
I had a D'lite on the big board before I had to clear it, so I got a glimpse into the future, and it is bright

Only problem is that this list changes every hour on the hour!  :icon_biggrin:

The Slucky Dual 50 and the Tubenit TOS just never can seem to find the time.

Too many :l2:

Top of list is Trainwreck Express-ish and Astroverb-ish, just takes a while to collect parts!

Also, TOS, a couple of SE designs that I have transformers for.....

Oh, yeah.....forgot revibe, I really want one of those!

I have yet to put the Webster Redeaux into a suitcase combo, and I want to build something using the PT and 8U8A tubes from a sig gen just to see if I can.

If only I'd stop acquiring VTVMs that need attention.

a 6ac10 pre and 6u10 power amp will start as ax84 firefly inspired, but probably change after that.

after that a nice high gain moster with a SE KT88 power amp section

I want to do a 5E3 as I do not have one. But to put a little twist on it I want it to be able to change into a BF amp using a four pole toggle switch.

Worked out the layout differences from a stock 5E3 layout.

That and a Marshall Plexi-2203 cross but am thinking of using 15CW5's in the output.

But seeing the 15CW5 is a lower voltage tube, I am inclined to give a Rocket flavor to the above. Or maybe change the second stage into a Pentode with CF using a 7258 pentode triode tube. Give it a Morph control to tame it a little.

Too many to list for me...but I'll list a couple.  :icon_biggrin:

For outright clone amps, I would like to do a

Supro Thunderbolt....I have the transformers, just no time yet.
Vox AC50
Vox AC30 with EF86 channel
Fender 5F6A Bassman
Marshall JTM 45
Marshall 18 watt
'63 Fender Bassman
copy of a 5E3 so I can sell my original 1956 5E3 and come out ahead money-wise
many more....

Then I have a bunch of my own projects to finish including

a Vox AC100 clone with a second higher gain channel added
a 3 amps in one head project
a bunch of organ chassis that will donate transformers
a big bass amp using 813's
more amps for customers based on the PDX Special that I made already for one

Maybe I'll have time for some of these once I get done with school and get a job and have some money coming in...haha

Just two? Heh heh. Always wanted to clone an AC15 proper and a Hiwatt DR504 (but maybe adapt it to 6V6's or something not so stinking loud). I kind of slowed down after the 2xELC82 'wreck clone because it turned out so to be such a great players amp. Regards

My first choice will be a single amp that combines both the Plexi 1959 preamp and the 800 2203 preamp in one amp.  Sluckey has already designed the basic amp.  I am thinking about adding some relays that would allow me to switch between the two with a footswitch and add a PPIMV to the Plexi side of the circuit.  The amp would run through a cabinet I made which is essentially a modified Bogner oversized cabinet with two Celestion Creamback 12M65s in it.

My second choice would probably be something close to the Ceriatone DZ30 Layout in a head cabinet.  It runs four el84s, has a GZ34 rectifier and three 12AX7s and uses one EF86 which has its own channel.  I will try a 1 X 12 ported cabinet I made from the ax84 site.  It is tuned to a GB128 Eminence speaker.  If I do not like that tone, I will probably build another Dumble 2 X 12 Oval Back cabinet and fill it with Celestion Blue's.

The amps I have made are as follows:

5f6a Bassman combo:  This amp was my first build.  I also own a 59 Fender Bassman LTD.  Of course I was going to build an amp with the greatest tone of all time when I started this build.  However, now after changing output transformers, capacitors, etc when I A/B them I can't tell which amp I am playing unless I am looking at them.  Frustrates me to no end.  My only consolation is the LTD is a good sounding amp.  I bought it off the Guitar Center floor because I was so impressed with its tone.  I never have played my build much.  Maybe if I gave it a chance it would break in and sound like the greatest amp of all time.  My expectations were way too high with that build.

ab763 build:  I came across a Super Reverb chassis because the person that owned it was drunk coming home from a gig and his amp fell out of the truck.  The cabinet was destroyed.  By the time I purchased the chassis the transformers had already been removed but I got a good deal on it so I purchased it.  I had some nice maple plywood that I was saving for a build.  Ended up making a 1 X 15" combo out of it.  Put a JBL speaker in it.  I am really happy with the tone of this amp but it is now in pieces in a closet waiting on a tolex recover.

5e3 build.  Everyone has to build one of these.  It has a reissue Jensen P12Q in it and is the amp I play the most by far.

Dumble ODS #124 build.  Sounds great.  Very fine amp.  I made a Dumble Oval Back 2 X 12 cabinet for it with Celestion Heritage G12-65 speakers in it.

Dumble SSS #002 hybrid build.  Sounds like SRVs amp tone.  I made a Dumble Oval Back 2 X 12 cabinet for it with EVM 12Ls in it.

Dumble ODS - HRM build.  Probably the best sounding amp I have constructed.  I made a hybrid oversized Bogner 2 X 12 closed-back speaker cabinet with Celestion Creamback 12M65s in it.  This is the cabinet I will probably use for the Marshall build above or I may make another like it and put Celestion Creamback 12H75s in it.

One that works perfectly the first time I fire it up.

One that sells.

But to answer your question in the spirit it was given, a Hiwatt 504 and a 50W Plexi.

We all want to build that one!!  :l2:

The question should be, "What two builds do your customers want you to do?"  :icon_biggrin:

The amp projects that interest me would be
- Suhr Badger: seems to get a wide range from clean to distorted from a single channel amp
- Matchless Clubman: never did something with the pentode coming second
- Laney Klipp: I don't think any other amp sounds like this one - not so sure whether I really want that tone
- Tweed Overdrive Special: been interested since the topic started a few years ago
Very hard to narrow it down to two, though.
Cheers Stephan

Then I have a few ideas of my own.
