that would be stoopit and weigh about eleventybillion pounds! :-p

was thinking about a 100W standel with 2 power tubes. kind_of_like standel_pre_amp_meets_dynaco/sunn_UL_P-P 100W only without the 6AN8 driver/gain stage.

yes, it's all about the headroom. lots of headroom.

I'd build a 50W JCM800 2204 and sandbag the other pair for spares. I can't think of much other use for a 6550. Used to love them until I got into the EL34. I love Craigslist, too. I bought a Peavey Triumph 120W combo a few years ago for $125. The seven preamp tubes were unremarkable recent production. The power tubes were a quad of USA Sylvania 6L6GC STR 387 tubes and man a pair of them sounds sweet in my Soldano Hot Rod 50. They'll probably outlive me.

Don't know if you saw this, but it runs 2 KT88's and 6550 nicely.  It is basically a Route 66 Dr Z with a PPMIV.  Has a lot of headroom and will hammer you in the chest.

thanks ed! looks interesting...

weird tone stack though: seems fairly high loss with highZ of EF86 plate.

It is a strange tonestack.  Sorta like a Peter Baxendall, but modified a tad.  May be high loss, but this is where the amp will overdrive.  I don't understand how it does it since I am a hack, but it does.  If you want to add some grind like a treble booster, just turn up the treble.  Same with the bass.

I built is so I have a input to the power section so I can use some different preamps I built.  Mainly the Ampeg B-15 so I can play bass.  It really makes a great low watt bass amp for home, rehearsal or small venue.

Not remotely Bax-like.

The 250p and 1Meg pass the highs. The 1Meg and 500p pass the lows. The TILT pot lets you hear one or the other or the mix of both.

The MID knob screws further with the response, though I don't see (without napkin or sim) that it will have a strong effect.

PRR, wasn't referring to the schematic you responded to.  I was referring to the attachment I placed called the Interstate 88 which is a Dr Z Route 66 preamp.

If you get a moment, take a look.  I would like to understand a bit more about the preamp/tone stack as it responds different than any other amp I have used.

Edit; It's in reply #8.   Brad/Willabe
