Title: 15" speaker
Post by: labb on September 14, 2014, 08:00:27 am
Any of you tried a 15" speaker with your amps and if so which one do you like. Am wanting to try one with a Bassman type build.

I have a vintage altec -lansing voice of the theater 15" that I use, technically it's a PA speaker but she sounds as good as my Celestin hot 100 and better, to me, than the pair of eminence.  I use it in a closed back JBL cab that weighs more than me!  Bass is nice and tight, highs seem to smooth out, has a sparkly sense when played clean n blows your hair back when vol, gain n bass are dime'd.  I have 2 JBL 15's that need re-coning but even with a taped up hole they will shake all the dust from the rafters and sound good!

+1 on the Altec. Our old band used a 421a as the driver in a Karlson enclosure for bass guitar, it worked well, with plenty of highs, similar to a JBL D140F but with a more even response.  They are common used for about $100-150. One caution: They are physically larger than many 15" and may require special mounting. Will handle 100 watts continuous.

I like JBLs and Altecs.
I would add EVM 15Ls to the list.
Loud, clean, even response.
All of these will give you a lot of sound per watt.
If you aren't looking for an 'earbleed' volume level maybe a Jensen C15N?

I have a home built cab that my buddy's grandpa made in 70's that has a Celestion G15T125 in it. One of  my favorite cabs to play through. It has a very tight bottom end with a smooth top end. I wish I could find a few more of these speakers a 2x15 setup. I have paired up with a Randall 2 cab Celest.on G12T100st

Greetings:  I prefer E/V. JBL and Altec over all others.  As a matter of course I use E/V speakers as upgrades in all of my amps.  EV-15B for bass, EV-15G for guitar in cabinets that are designed for 15" speakers, EV-12G for those designed for 12" speakers and either classic EV-10 or Celestion 10" for smaller apps.  JBL D series and Altecs are just as good for my money but harder to find and usually too pricey both to buy and to repair if you can find them at all.  I sure wish I had the JBL D-130s I owned in the 60s back.  They were amazing.  I also use E/V SRO and EVM speakers routinely.  I have found that most classic E/V designs can be re-coned and frequently with with improved parts for better sound and reliability.  The higher the efficiency, the better.  It is always easy to add the distortion you wish by reducing or eliminating NFB and using a stomp box.  I also like using my Hafler Hellraiser preamp with large solid state amps for instrument amps.  E/V 7600 or 1.5 amps work great but Carver PM amps are my favorite both for DJ work and instrument sound re-enforcement.  Start with clean and go from there.  I love the sound of two or four 6V6, 6L6, EL34, KT88 or other valve amps but I always eliminate the sag tube rectifiers produce by using full wave solid state rectifiers and beefed up filter caps.  I know many players like that sound and that is just fine but I am a "clean, crisp. low THD" fan.  Maximum headroom, flat frequency response and the lowest distortion is where I like to start.  Jim

I am using the Weber 15" Neodymium in my Blues Jr octal conversion. Of course it needed a custom cabinet, but sounds great.  Neo saves a couple of pounds and my back.
