Title: Which WGS speaker for a Dave Hunter Two-Stroke SE amp?
Post by: Pete1950 on November 16, 2014, 05:04:20 pm
I recently completed this amp in its latest form utilizing a Ruby 5Y3GT/Tungsol RI 12AX7/Tungsol 6L6GC tube set. I used Mallory 150 caps for coupling caps and the Weber WSE15 OT. I am currently driving a paralleled pair of 8 ohm Jensen MOD10/35's for amp testing purposes and the amp is sounding pretty good. The amp has "passed" all of my quality checks and is now ready to drive a cab loaded with a single 12" speaker (my choice), either simple open-backed speaker cab or a combo cab. I definitely want to use a 12" WGS speaker. I have experience with an ET65 and a Veteran 30, both 12" and 8 ohm. Which WGS ceramic (alnico spkr too expensive for this build, at the moment...) speaker do y'all recommend for my single-ended 6L6GC amp? I'm leaning slightly towards a Reaper...

What is the single most important tone that you want to hear from that amp,,clean or dirty, and what specific quality (punchy, middy, throaty, softened highs, tight bass, early or late breakup, etc.)?
And which player's tone would you most want to recreate or be close to?

I haven't used any of the WGS speakers, but would use their Celestion crossover suggestions to make a better informed choice.

I'd have a hard time picking a 1x12 because now that I've heard what you can have when you mix/match a 2x12, it's gonna be hard to choose one or the other.

For punchy classic rock with sizzle and Page'y style breakup, the Celestion G12H-30 Anniv. won my 'speaker of the year' contest (only held in my shop  :icon_biggrin:) last year as the "best" sounding affordable ceramic. So I'd be partial to the Reaper as well. I'm a sucker for Celestion.

I can't afford alnico either, so none of them were included in the contest.

With SE amps I prefer to have little to no breakup coming from the speaker.  It is easy to get Power tube distortion. I would go with the 12" G12C/S and get all the warm and fussy from the amp.  It will be awful difficult to get a clean tone without a clean speaker.

I would consider a Weber California as well.
