"Theory of circuit design" was my glimpse into heavy detailing.
55 years later, Dan's compound output stage misses the mark. It worked for him, and many builders, but was high-strung and not fool-proof. But change it to Darlington, this IS the modern audio power-amp, except transistors are much cheaper today so we use a lot more for "small" benefits (lower THD) and major blessings (blow-up proofing).
