Title: Webber California
Post by: Toxophilite on June 21, 2015, 01:57:07 am
I just picked up a used Weber California
It was in decent shape except for some very obvious glue drips down the back of the cone from where the spider meets the voice coil, meets the cone. The seller claimed it was original, though I'm not entirely sure
Whilst it is certainly an efficient speaker I found it darker than I expected from a JBL "Clone" (though it looks more like an old ceramic Jensen with a big aluminum dust cover!)
It's also kind of hard sounding  in the high mid emphasis and thicker sounding than a JBL (in my opinion)

Anyone else have any experiences with these speakers or insight into Weber's quality control
(I'm not critiquing them, just curious)

I have a Cali ceramic 12" with aluminum vc cover. It has lots of clear bottom and also very bright. It's in my Leslie now. The Leslie enclosure seems to knock off some of the brightness. I like it, but it's not a JBL 130!

hmmm, This one allegedly hasn't been used much so it might not be 'broken in' as they say
though I'm not sure what that means exactly as I've never really purchased a near new speaker before.

I've been playing that Weber California more and I have to say it's has the least high end of any speaker I've ever put in that deluxe build...and I've tried  a lot of speakers, not all of them JBLs, many others as well.
Strange

Could be more used than you think.

:icon_biggrin: True or altered..it's the only one I've ever seen so I've not much to compare it to other than pictures on the internet
The cone seems pretty stiff and quite thick too and it has a 4" dust cover for it's little 2" voicecoil
and then there's this

That doesn't look right.  Email the photos to CJ at Weber.  I have one and it is not a dark speaker but as Sluckey said it aint a JBL, but it is a huge improvement over the Utah that was in my BlackFace Pro.  If it was a home recone, Weber will make it new again for $25.

hmm I have contacted Webber twice through their 'contact us" on their web page and once via their facebook page, no luck yet but I imagine they're busy

Try their recone dept head Brian at brian@webervst.com
Brian Spane is his name.  That may get you past the office.

Good Luck

Ha!
I just heard from him
He said their glue is lightweight and shouldn't be a problem but I sent him pictures and the serial number etc so he can check it out

Thanks!

I heard from Brian, he said the glue shouldn't be a problem other than ugly and they could recone it but I think the shipping from here to California and back plus $25 micht be more than what I paid for it, I tried it in rehearsal today in my deluxe and I was seriously underwhelmed, Deluxe with 6L6s at 4-5, not quite loud enough, dull and muddy sounding, pretty well the opposite of what I expected. I guess I'll pass it on and hopefully make some of my money back
