Title: Alnico II and Alnico III magnet swaps for pickups
Post by: tubenit on June 23, 2015, 05:37:33 am
Recently tried swapping magnets out and I am very pleased with how easy this is to do and how positive the results are for me.

I took a DiMarzio Air Classic in the bridge (which had an Alnico 5 magnet) and put in an Alnico 2. Warmer and clearer tone with better note definition in chording to my ears.

So then I took a StewMac  Golden Age humbucker and replaced the Alnico 5 in it with an Alnico 3. Nice clean tone with warm mids in the neck position now.

This is a nice combination for me having the Alnico 3 (clean tone) in the neck and Alnico 2 (clear warm mid) in the bridge. I have a DiMarzio Fast Track 1 in the middle position with my 5 way switch.

Total cost for the mods $11.  I got the magnets off ebay.  Takes me about 30 minutes or less to swap one out.

With respect, Tubenit

Mojotone carries a variety of pickup magnets so perhaps Doug can get them for you?
