Title: Rifle Rest - I want to build one for optics alignment - Tips ?
Post by: kagliostro on September 06, 2015, 11:04:32 am
I want to build a rifle rest for optics alignment

I give a look on the net and I foud one that I like

www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TopgZTrpzMw# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TopgZTrpzMw#)

All the other rest I've seen don't plan to fix the rifle to the rest, except this

http://www.schuetzenbedarf-baur.com/product_info.php?pName=gehmann-820-schie%DFmaschine (http://www.schuetzenbedarf-baur.com/product_info.php?pName=gehmann-820-schie%DFmaschine)

do you think it will be better to add to the rest an elevation knob like in this rest ?

www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OJV5o9XyfyU# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OJV5o9XyfyU#)

and what about to add recoil springs ?

I think recoil springs aren't indispensable for a 22LR caliber (or they are ?)

Have you councils for me ?

Thanks

Franco

Will this be for competitive shooting or product review - that you will need this kind of solid support to dial in a sight?  A sand bag or bi-pod should get you plenty close?  A .22 is good to about 100yrds.  Unless you just like building things, I would not think this is necessary.  Maybe some of our other marksmen will give their views.

By the way, Forza Ferrari! Poor Kimi....but they are closing the gap!  Go Seb! Grazie tifosi! Questo anno è incredible. Grazie, a tutta la squadra dico ancora grazie!

Jim, tifosi!

Ferrari was a little unlucky yesterday, my father (91 yo) is a great fan  :wav:

About the rest, is to be used to set optics, not during shooting (and, YES, I like to build metal stuff  :icon_biggrin: )

Ciao

For a sight-in rest I recommend something like this:  http://www.cabelas.com/product/caldwell-174-lead-sled-plus-rest/709206.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Drifle%252Brest%26x%3D10%26y%3D6%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%252BProducts&Ntt=rifle+rest (http://www.cabelas.com/product/caldwell-174-lead-sled-plus-rest/709206.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Drifle%252Brest%26x%3D10%26y%3D6%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%252BProducts&Ntt=rifle+rest)

Such a rest can also be used with an AR-15 style rifle, which has a long protruding magazine.  That can be an issue with rests that have a center rail, which is in the way of a magazine.  Though a center rail is fine with a traditional style rifle.

The rest in your photo is unsuitable in my opinion.  The fore-end of the rifle should rest only on a soft surface -- like a shooting bag or foam; never on a hard surface.  And, the fore-end should never be clamped in place.  These things will alter the way the rifle shoots and change the point of impact.  (Also, never rest the barrel on anything, only the fore-end of the stock.)

Springs are unnecessary and may also change the point of impact.  A sight-in rest should place the butt-end of the stock as close to your shoulder as possible.  To relieve the effects of repeated recoil, wear a coat, or shooting vest with a gel pack in the shoulder area.  Also, in the rest I showed, bags of lead shot placed in the tray do a great job of damping felt recoil.

A pair of hours ago the link was OK and that rest is one of those I’ve seen before you post the link and I like

Thanks JJasilli
Also in one tread about the construction of a DIY rest there was a guy that was saying the same things you say

Can you confirm that what you say keeps in account that the rest is to be used only to set optics and not shooting ? I'll not use this rest for shoot (Thanks)

I really would like to know which is the procedure used in the US Army to set optics for precision shooting (I believe it will be a very accurate one)

Is possible to download a pdf manual about ?

Grazie

"Can you confirm that what you say keeps in account that the rest is to be used only to set optics and not shooting?"

Yes, confirmed.  A sight-in rest should support the rifle both front and rear.  This is to take shooter error "out of the equation" for sight-in purposes, and to show how well the rifle itself can group a set of shots.

Here's a google page for "Caldwell Lead Sled".  https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&rlz=1C1RNBN_enUS433US433&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=caldwell+lead+sled (https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&rlz=1C1RNBN_enUS433US433&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=caldwell+lead+sled)

There's lots of other makers too.  This should give you ideas if you want to build your own rest.

***************
On the internet are US Army Manuals and videos, and lots of other info, on how to sight-in and shoot the old M1 Garrand fifle, and the M16 (AR-15).  If you can't find them post again.

Thanks JJasilli

I'll look to the commercial rest on the link, my idea is to borrow ideas and build one by myself

About military manuals I've find so many that I don't know which to chose for download and reading

someone has a title for me ?

Thanks

Franco
